Research: Researchers at Merck discovered the antibiotics, platensimycin and platencin,
which exhibit potent antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
(MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and other bacterial pathogens. The goal of
our project was to determine the effect of primary metabolites (such as amino acids, vitamins,
purines, pyrimidines, and organic acids) on the production of the secondary metabolites,
platensimycin and platencin. Our approach involved using a disk-diffusion method to measure
the zones of inhibition (zone of clearance) on agar plates containing S. aureus.
