GE POWER CONVERSION, Minneapolis, MN
(Jan 2008 - May 2012)
GE Power Conversion custom designs, manufactures and services electric
motors (slow speed synchronous and induction motors), turbo- generators and
brushless exciters for the Oil & Gas, Power Generation, Metals and Mining,
Pulp & Paper and General Industries.
Engineering Project Manager (Product Design & Technology Development -
Electric Generotors, Motors, Exciters)
. Led a project team comprising of mechanical, R&D and design engineers.
Work closely with manufacturing to resolve process design issues,
design for manufacturability issues and minimize downtime.
. Aligned different teams across US, Europe & India, and multiple
functional areas to identify and establish key opportunities for
Converteam to meet Strategic objectives.
. Established a team of design and mechanical engineers at GE Design
Center, Chennai, India. In 2011, spent 4 months in Chennai to grow
the team from 6 to 12 engineers.
. Managed 3 large product development and technology transfer projects
for product design improvements with a combined yearly budget of more
than $600K and cost savings of close to $1M in the first year of
implementation.

parameterization.
. Supported ongoing projects with FEA & CFD computational analysis and
design optimization.
Major Product Development Projects at GE Power Conversion
Pin Vent Technology Development
. Initiated a technology development project for innovation in the
internal duct spacer (pin vent) construction for a synchronous
electric motor. The invention provides a means of economically
doubling the number of internal core air ducts, which produces a
better distribution of cooling air passing through the core and
reduces stator winding temperatures.
. Developed design details and conducted a computational analysis to
quantify the benefits of temperature reduction.
. Worked with the manufacturing and quality team to develop a pilot
project & testing procedures for evaluate new technology.
. Established standard procedures for engineering & design
documentation.
Ventilation Design Improvements
. Initiated a cost reduction and design improvement project to optimize
the fan and rotor baffle designs. The new design significantly
improves the cooling of the electrical machines and allows for
shortening the machine size for the same rating.
. Conducted computational analysis (thermal, structural, and fluid) to
quantify the improvements in design. The information gathered by
analysis is used for design of experiments.
Noise Attenuation of 2-pole turbo-generators
. Conducted acoustic experiments and simulations to identify the sources
of noise from a 2-pole turbo-generator.
BOSTON SCIENTIFIC CORPORATION, Maple Grove, MN
(Nov 2006 - Jan 2008)
Senior R&D Engineer (Quality & Design Systems)
. Worked on cross-functional teams for developing next generation of
drug-eluting stent (DES) delivery systems, balloon catheters products
within Boston Scientific portfolio.
. Worked on the product development of new innovative drug-eluting stent
(DES) coating, laser bond and screw extrusion process technologies.
. Understanding the FDA regulatory requirements (21CFR Part 807) and its
impact on product and process design
Major Product Development Projects at Boston Scientific
Screw Extrusion Process
Developed a comprehensive screw extrusion computational model for the
prediction of screw performance and optimization of screw designs. The
problem is very challenging as it involves mixing of polymer pellets,
melting (heat transfer) and metering. I led a cross-functional team of
process, engineers, R&D and extrusion engineers to formulate an efficient
design of experiments (DOE).
Proximal Laser Bond for Balloon Catheter
Worked on the development of a new innovative method of laser welding for
bond formation at the proximal end of a balloon catheter tube. The process
was very challenging as it involved several key parameters to be controlled
(laser power, layer thickness, material properties, laser reflection etc)
and mechanisms of bond formation are also not well known. Developed a
computational model to understand the mechanisms of bond formation and to
investigate the effect of material properties on bond strength. The laser
bond technology is now being experimented and implemented and is fast
replacing the traditional adhesive bonding used previously.
Design Optimization of a Catheter Manifold Assembly
The design of the manifold assembly had several issues with air gaps,
trapped bubbles and regions of shrinkage. I led a team of engineers to
analyze the current injection molding process by changing the gate
location, changing plastic materials to monitor the improvements in the
parts. The team proposed an improved design of the manifold assembly and
the optimization of injection molding process to manufacture manifold
components, which were almost free of critical defects. The new design is
being used in the current balloon catheter assembly lines.
