QUALIFICATIONS

My qualifications cover two major career areas: health and communications

Communications

I have written professionally for two major newspapers. I have extensive experience in producing copy, proofreading and editing on a tight deadline. I produced copy in a variety of categories including health, crime, politics and community news. While I reported to the editors, I worked independently researching information; conducting interviews, and writing publishable copy with minimal to no direct supervision on one project or multi-projects.

Health

As a certified nursing assistant, I have worked in nursing homes and hospital environments off and on for over 15 years. In my current job as a nurse support technician, I am responsible for assessing patient needs, organizing my work assignment, completing reports (via a paper trail or online), and completing direct patient care tasks: vital signs, glucose monitoring, EKG's, some phlebotomy and light wound care. My role requires that I pay close attention to patient activity, pain needs, and changing mental and physical status. I am also responsible for training new hires.

EXPERIENCE

Volunteer Work

I am currently a member of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center's Domestic Violence Board of Advisors. The Board is responsible to ensuring the hospital's attention to patients who enter the hospital needing intervention from domestic violence issues. In the past I also volunteered on the House of Ruth's Domestic Violence hotline; CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for children who have been abused/neglected; and For All Seasons, a suicide hotline.

Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC), 2007 to current

My duties include: vital signs, the insertion and removal of catheters, glucose monitoring, EKG's, light wound dressings, some phlebotomy and assisting patients with bathing, toileting and transferring. My duties also include computer navigating, patient assessment, filling out reports (online or via paper trail) and independent prioritizing and organizing of my work assignment.

Sinai Hospital, 2006 to 2008

Sinai Hospital trained me to transfer from a GNA (geriatric nursing assistant, nursing home limited) to a patient care technician. I learned phlebotomy, glucose monitoring, EKG's, insertion and removal of foley catheters, light wound dressings and combined with my knowledge of vital signs, CPR and assisting patients with bathing, toileting and transferring I was able to practice my skills in a hospital setting. Computer navigating and independent organization of my work were necessary skills for my position.

Writing, 2006 to present

For the past few years I have written several fictional short stories, utilizing many fictional and nonfiction writing resources. I write online for Yahoo Voices - articles about various subject matter including nutrition, exercise, the healthcare environment, and money matters. I wrote freelance for the Baltimore publication WomenScope News Magazine as an Inspirational columnist. I also maintain my own website: Ezhealthcents. com.

The AFRO (Baltimore Afro American Newspaper), 1998 -2005

I worked at staff writer covering political, community, business and health subject areas. I took on a leadership role of filling the health page, writing copy, editing and providing fillers when needed. To accompany the articles I wrote I photographed people and covered events to get what I needed. I received an award - the 2004 Unity Awards in Media, for a series of articles I wrote about City College High School. I received another award for an article I wrote in the religious category of a media contest. I interviewed celebrities, Baltimore City notables such as the mayor, city council president, numerous business heads and the community at large for articles. I also witnessed the execution of Tyrone Gilliam in 1998 and wrote a series of articles afterward.

The Star Democrat Newspaper, 1996-1998

I worked in the community news department, gathering editorial content relevant to a diverse population. I was responsible for producing two articles a day, whether or not they were published. I also served as the photographer for 90 percent of my articles. The subject matter included but was not limited to health news; seeking outstanding people or groups in the community and showcasing their stories; independently contacting and interviewing community leaders, business owners or whomever I needed to complete my articles.

SKILLS

I am computer savvy; I am able to produce error-free written copy by utilizing my staff writing and editing skills; I have excellent communication skills via telephone and/or in person, I listen well and I am comfortable conducting interviews if necessary; I work well with others as a team as well as independently with minimal supervision. I am focused on maintaining a high level of professionalism in all that I do and say.
