Personal Statement:
I am currently a third year mental health nursing student due to graduate in March 2014. I am a confident
individual who likes to learn and add to my existing skills. I am highly motivated and takes pride in my
work. I work in new environments with ease and enjoy meeting new people and am a confident
communicator. I work well within a team but also uses my own initiative. I have good self awareness,
knowing my capabilities and limits and aware of boundaries. I am confident using technology, and have
efficient I.T. skills. I am eager to keep developing my knowledge and skills by undertaking postgraduate
studies that are relevant to my field of work.

Mar 2012-Present: Healthcare support worker on Cefn Onn Ward,
Cardiff and Vale NHS University Health Board, Iorwerth Jones Centre (Part of Whitchurch Hospital),

Brief description of duties: This is a challenging behaviour unit for functional elderly patients. My duties
involve assisting with the individual’s personal hygiene needs, assisting with their daily living skills, such
as; cooking, cleaning, budgeting, socialising, communicating, encouraging and supporting each
individual, monitoring and assessing their mental health and their physical health. I support individuals
within the ward environment as well as out in the community, promoting rehabilitation, to encourage
their independence and empower them to actively participate in their own care and recovery. I also have
to use de-escalating techniques due to patient conflicts or if a patient is aggressive, agitated or distress
due to their specific disorders.
Mar 2011-Mar 2012: Healthcare Support Worker on the Pool,

Brief description of duties: Working on the Pool meant that I wasn’t contracted to a specific ward,
covering 5 rehabilitations units whose patients needs varied. These units included: a challenging
behaviour ward, a functioning elderly ward, and three houses in the community. My duties ranged from
motivational support to personal care depending on each patient’s needs. I engaged with patients on a 1:1
basis or in group activities, assessing their moods, behaviours, thoughts and general presentations.
Mar 2010-Mar 2011: Healthcare Support Worker on East 1 ward,
Cardiff and Vale NHS University Health Board, East 1 ward, Whitchurch Hospital, Park Road,

Brief description of duties: This is a challenging behaviour ward for adults with various mental health
disorders. My role would be to encourage each individual to be able to look after themselves
independently by supporting them to acquire daily living skills such as; budgeting, attending to their
personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and socially integrate them into communities. My duties
were to engage with each individual, build a therapeutic relationship, monitor their mental well-being.
On this particular ward, I had to use skills to de-escalate situations due to conflicts or if a patient became
aggressive or agitated. The patients on this ward were from various backgrounds; acute wards, forensic
settings, elderly, and long stay patients.
Sept 2009-Feb 2010: Volunteer Support Worker
West Glamorgan Council Alcohol and Drug Abuse (WGCADA), 4 Gaylards Buildings, Court Road,

Brief description of duties: WGCADA offer help and support to people who have issues with alcohol or
drug abuse. I volunteered in the Bridgend branch which offered the Harm Reduction programme and the
Abstinence programme. My role was to offer support to the clients and staff, assisting in projects and
activities, to build therapeutic relationships, assist in the needle exchange programme offering new clean
needles, advice and information, support and to safely dispose of used needles.
May 2008-Aug 2008: Volunteer Refuge Worker
Women’s Aid, PO Box 26, Bridgend, CF31 3YJ
Brief description of duties: Women’s Aid offer support, accommodation and advice to women and
children fleeing domestic abuse. I supported the staff writing notes on the clients, and looked for
activities that could potentially help the women and their children. I supported the women and the
children in the refuges, cleaning rooms in preparation for new clients, did the food stock, talked and
listened to each individual, offering support and advice, helped clients fill in forms such as housing
benefits, etc.
June 2008-Aug 2008: Volunteer Youth Support Worker
Yellow Wales (part of Hafod Housing), 14-18 Queen Street, Town Centre, Bridgend, CF31 1HX
Brief description of duties: Yellow Wales offers support, accommodation and education to homeless
youth aged 16-24. I supported the youth with their OCN qualifications, filling in application forms,
reading and writing skills, organising a fundraiser and gaining sponsorships, as well as designing and
creating a website. I listened and talked to them, assisted them if they had any difficulties, and motivated
them to complete tasks.
Oct 2002-Feb 2010: Cash Office and Information Desk Supervisor
Homebase LTD, Unit 1, Picton Court Retail Park, Waterton, Bridgend, CF31 3XX
Brief description of duties: I worked in Homebase for nearly 8 years, and was trained in every
department, warehouse, shop floor, operation office, kitchens and bathroom sales, cashiers, information
desk, and cash office. My main duties was to count and balance the accounts for Homebase, completing
and organising paperwork. I was also in charge to train and supervise a team of staff, delegating tasks,
dealt with customer orders, refunds, complaints, telephone enquiries. I also opened and closed the store
and was a key holder.
