• Selected through an All India Entrance Examination conducted by the Director of
Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra, India, for a three year Senior Residency
Training Programme in Paediatric Surgery leading to the M.Ch degree.
• Topiwala National Medical College is a premiere teaching institution in Mumbai, India
and has a 2400 bedded tertiary care hospital attached to it.
• During my training period, I was involved in the pre-operative, operative and post-
operative care of all paediatric surgical cases including gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary,
polytrauma, urological, thoracic, oncological, burns and neonatal surgical cases.
• Performed surgeries under supervision as well as independently including
bronchooesophagoscopies and cystoscopies.

• During my tenure I was actively involved in Paediatric Minimal Access Surgery
program of our unit. The Department of Paediatric Surgery at TNMC and BYL
Nair hospital is ISO 9001-2000 certified. During my tenure, the department conducted
2st and 3rd International Paediatric Laparoscopic Workshops in which Prof Felix Schier,
Prof Thom Lobe and Prof Tan were the International Faculty. Dr Sanjay Oak, Prof
and Head with whom I have the privilege to work for three and a half years was
awarded B.C.Roy Award by A.P.J.Kalam, Past President of India, for developing
Laparoscopic Paediatric Surgery in India.

month), NEC(1-2 per month), Hirschsprung's disease( 1-2 per month colostomy and pull throughs),
Abdominal wall defects( 1-2 per month)

2) Paediatric Urology: It comprises nearly 30%. It includes PU Valve fulguration(2-3 per month),
Pyeloplasties ( 2 per month), Ureteric reimplantation(1-2 per month), Urethroplasty for
hypospadias( 2-4 per month), Exstrophy Epispadias repair( 3-4 per year), Bladder Augmentation(3-4
per year), Orchidopexy (Open 4-5 and Laparoscopic 1-2 per month), Circumcisions(25-30 per
month).
3) General Paediatric Surgery: it comprises nearly 30%. It includes Inguinal herniotomies for
hernia & hydrocele( 10-15 per month), Appendicectomies( 3-4 per month), Umbilical hernia repairs(
1-2 per month), Exploratory laparotomy for peritonitis and Intestinal obstruction(4-5 per month),
Splenectomies( 1-2 per month), Pyoloromyotomy(1-2 per month), Rectal polypectomy( 2-3 per
month)
4) Paediatric Neurosurgery: Ventriculoperitoneal shunts ( 1-2 per month), Meningocele and
myelomeningocele repair( 2- 3 per month)
5) Paediatric Thoracic Surgeries: Empyema - Decortication( Open 2-3 per month and
Thoracoscopy (1-2 per month), Bronchoscopies both diagnostic and therapeutic for foreign
bodies( 2-3 per month)
6) Paediatric Oncology: Wilms' tumor, Neuroblastoma, Hepatoblastoma, Sacrococcygeal teratoma,
Ovarian and testicular tumours etc (1-2 per month)
7) Minimal Access Surgery :
Laparoscopy-for appendicectomy, cholecystectomy, pyloromyotomy, adhesiolysis,
Intraabdominal cysts etc (4-6 per month).
