Locum in Cat 3 Prion unit, specialising in IHC identification of Prion proteins in

both diagnostic cases and research material. Responsible for dissection and

processing of both of the above tissues, frozen and paraffin; preparation of high

quality serial sections for performing IHC research as well as diagnostic tests,

microscopic IQC of tests and IHC trouble shooting.

I was employed on a short contract in a small private laboratory as Senior BMS

to set up Immunohistochemistry service on site including equipment evaluation

and procurement. My duties and responsibilities were additionally; specimen data

entry, specimen dissection (Cat. A,B and skins), prioritizing urgent workload,

processing and embedding tissues, routine sectioning, routine and special

staining, microscopic slide IQA, Mohs and sentinel node/breast frozen sections

and troubleshooting all of the above.

Originally employed as Specialist BMS in the Histology Core Facility of the

Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit, subsequently the post was changed to

the role of Laboratory Manager in first week of employment.

In my role as the Laboratory Manager, I had sole technical and managerial

responsibility for setting up and performing all aspects of the Histology Core

Facility for translational research into Advanced Lung Diseases. This role

included all routine histological processing, microtomy, routine and special

staining, optimisation and validation of both routine and developmental

Immunohistochemistry, tissue microarrays and developmental molecular studies,

Health and Safety, Quality Control, equipment purchase, maintenance and

general housekeeping..

My responsibilities also include advising on the feasibility, preliminary

costing and histological service implications in the planning stage of the research

projects, the training of PhD students and other staff working within the facility,

to enable them to carry out routine and specialist work under my supervision .

The laboratory was fully operational on my departure, with the exception of

developmental molecular studies.

HISTOPATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT

MOUNT VERNON HOSPITAL,

I was employed as a Specialist BMS and as such, was an integral part of a

small team in the day to day working of a very busy diagnostic histology

laboratory.

My duties and responsibilities included the following; specimen dissection

(Cat. A,B and skins), prioritizing urgent workload, processing and embedding

tissues, routine sectioning, routine and special staining, microscopic slide IQA,

frozen sections and trouble shooting.

In addition, completing all the necessary on-line laboratory

documentation; preparation and updating of SOP's, COSHH and Risk

Assessments, introducing new techniques, maintenance of equipment and also

performing both requirements for National External Assurance Systems and

Internal Quality Assurance Systems.

My role included supervision and training of the MLA's and other staff

working within the department.

RESTORATION OF APPEARANCE AND FUNCTION TRUST.

MOUNT VERNON HOSPITAL

As Senior Biomedical Scientist and sole histological scientist, I was

responsible for the Histology’s Quality Control, Health and Safety, COSHH and

Risk Assessment.

My workload was entirely research and utilized formalin fixed, paraffin

embedded material from within RAFT, diagnostic archive material in addition to

cell cultures, and also substantial amount of cryostat work. Research is often

repetitive in nature requiring skill, concentration and attention to detail.

I set up new techniques for many of the Projects, with a variety of tissues

including muscle, nerve, skin, BCC’s, SCC’s, melanoma, wound healing, scarring

and angiogenesis in artificial matrices, tissue microarrays and troubleshooting as

necessary.

I was required to advise on the feasibility and histological service

implications at the initial planning stage of the research projects, involving both

routine and research Immunohistochemistry and then finally advising Medics and

sandwich students on image analysis and photography of the experimental

materials .

Flexibility and good communication was an important part of my role within

RAFT with the Research Fellows, the Group leaders and other laboratory staff

but especially on the fund raising open days, with our sponsors; many of who

were lay people who had been directly affected on the Burns unit or as skin

cancer patients or relatives.

HISTOPATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT

ROYAL MARSDEN HOSPITAL LONDON April 1989 -- October 1995

Employed as MLSO 3, Technical Head of department, I was responsible

for and fully involved in all the following areas; Clinical Pathology Accreditation,

staff training and appraisals, workload assessments, supply and budget control,

quality control and all Health and Safety matters.

I had a “hands on” approach, and was responsible / involved on a day to

day basis for the high throughput routine histology workload and up-dating the

rapidly expanding quality Immunohistochemistry service, using both routine and

developmental antibodies. I made a heartfelt decision to leave my post to spend

more time with my young family.

Employed as MLSO2 in a temporary post. I was requested to apply for

vacant MLSO 3 post by Consultant Head of Department.

rapid and efficient throughput of high quality workload, including both routine and

was a busy mobile service, serving several the private hospitals within the

London area.

Employed as Senior MLSO in a reference laboratory covering the whole of

Saudi Arabia. Staffing levels of 5 British staff and 2 Saudi technicians. Total

responsibility for all routine workload, development and research work and

additionally training of Saudi technicians. Returned to UK with husband when his

Saudi contract finished.

Employed on contract as Senior medical technologist and responsible for

setting up of new Histopathology and Cytology laboratory, which was fully

functioning when I decided to move to a larger Teaching hospital with greater

variety of histological processes.

ROTHERHAM DISTRICT GENERAL HOSPITAL 1980- 1982

Employed as Senior Medical Laboratory Scientific officer-first supervisory

role, in a busy routine diagnostic histology and cytology laboratory with 8 staff.

Deputy for Senior Chief MLSO.

SHEFFIELD AREA HEALTH AUTHORITY 1976- 1980

Employed as trainee and then MLSO ; I was fortunate to be trained to a

very high standard and worked in Histopathology, Cytology and 2+ years in

Neuropathology laboratories in several different Teaching Hospitals over the 4

years of my training and study for Fellowship, gaining a great deal of knowledge

and learning how to be practically flexible along the way.
