Duties as a Consultant U rologist

I worked at Urology unit at Teaching Hospital, Kandy, until

very recent where I had the longest duration of experience as a

consultant for 17 years. This unit is the tertiary referral center for half

t he country. The junior staff comprised of one senior registrar and four

senior house officers. Thirty five bed ward with about thir ty nursing

officers looks after the ward work. Facilities available included an in

house ESWL machine and separate operation theatre.

A t ypical week’s work schedule includes

2 out patient clinics with attendance over 125 patients a day

1 Stone clinic for follow up of stone patients

4 Operating sessions

3 f lexible cystoscopy sessions

6 ESWL sessions – full day session treating about 10-12 patients a day

3 Comprehensive ward rounds

Daily on call for casualties

Operations performed in this unit included-

A ll endoscopic procedures including ureteroscopy

A ll open surgical procedures including radical

p rostatectomy, radical cystectomy and neo bladder

reconstruction and urethroplasy.
