Flow Cytometry and Biophotonics

Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) June 2011 – May 2013

Built a MATLAB code that model waveforms of each individual cell that passed through the laser in a movie.

Used a confocal microscope to image the fluorescent and non-fluorescent yeast cells and formulated a

growth curve.

Completed a master’s thesis on this matter.

Won an Oral Presentation at CYTO 2013 International Conference.

International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU) June 2009 – December 2009

Performed growth curves on fibroblasts from rat tails.

Tested menadione at different concentrations on HeLA cells to see its effects on killing cancer cells.

Purified Hemoglobin through tangential flow filtration (TFF) and coupled it with diafiltration in order to

produce a stoma-free product.

Observed methemoglobin level, oxygen affinity, SDS-PAGE, and the molecular weight distribution.

Presented at the SROP conference at Michigan State University.

Won first place at the New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation research competition.
