PERSONAL STATEMENT

I am very proud to have been part of the law enforcement profession and the many great years I spent working for the Columbus Division of Police. It was an honor to be part of this organization and the dedicated men and women who serve within it at all ranks. Police officers have a great responsibility to the citizens to conduct themselves professionally and with integrity. As I led police officers and supervisors, I strived to be a leader whom they willingly followed based upon the example I set. I am constantly looking for ways to grow and challenge myself. For this reason, I am pursuing other leadership opportunities in the private sector. I believe my education, training and years of experience make me uniquely suited to make such a transition. I also believe the knowledge, management abilities and leadership skills I have developed throughout my career translate very well to pursuing other opportunities. My hope is that prospective employers will also see how invaluable my body of work would be to their organization(s) as well.

More importantly than my career however, is my family. I am a husband and father with a blended family. We have eight beautiful daughters and one teenage son. My ultimate responsibility and greatest work lies in how I provide and care for them.

Extensive knowledge of city ordinances and state laws.

Proficient in all areas of responsibility for Columbus police officers and sergeants.

I supervised 26 police officers in this role. This was my first leadership position. At the time, this seemed to be a significant number of personnel to manage. Overtime, I began to develop my personal style of leadership. This assignment gave me a tremendous amount experience in managing people. I used that experience once my career advanced. I later received another promotion and would manage upwards of 75-100 employees.

Responsible for daily roll calls with police officers, administrative investigations, scheduling training, issuing appropriate discipline and conducting annual performance evaluations. These responsibilities helped to tremendously improve my writing skills which I believe are far above average to this day.

Investigated uses of force, cruiser accidents, forced entries, injury to prisoners and various other administrative issues.

Awarded the Medal of Merit, Special Commendation, Physical Fitness and Safe Driving awards.

I served on 2010 “Patrol Redistricting Committee”. Serving on this committee exposed me to the inner workings of labor/management disputes. To be effective in this position I was forced to develop and improve my public speaking and negotiation skills.

Prepared bid specifications and Requests for Purchase (RFPs) for vehicles and technology.

Managed a 1.2 million dollar COPS grant, which funded the Division’s Arbitrator (cruiser video) project. I served as the project manager for this grant funded endeavor. This was a two year effort in which I facilitated the selection, purchase, up-fitting and evaluation of three vehicle platforms which the Division would be testing. After the evaluation process, we narrowed the vehicle selection to one. Once selected, as the acting grant administrator, I used grant funds to purchase and install the cruiser video systems in our entire fleet of frontline, marked vehicle.
