Johnson Controls, Inc. Plymouth, Michigan

A $27 billion global leader in the design and manufacture of Automotive Interior Systems.

Engineering Integration Manager

Trail Blazer & GMC Envoy (2004 to 2006)

Managed separate budgets for annual product cost, engineering costs and tooling costs ranging from $162 million to $339 million.

Led the interior design and development team for the Chevy Trailblazer and GMC Envoy total interior. Innovation in leadership and program management was required because the team was comprised of General Motors, Johnson Controls, supplier, and competitor employees. This leadership resulted in a lower than normal level of change and cost creep which resulted in the interior meeting all cost, timing, and mass requirements.

Organized and led the writing of a Statement of Work for each sub-system in the interior. These documents define the product content, design intent, functional requirements, and test requirements for the sub-system. The use of extensive analytical thinking and organizational skills resulted in each Statement of Work being released on time and with a level of detail targeted as a benchmark for future Statement of Work documents within General Motors.

Led the cross functional Technical Review process during the quoting and sourcing stages of the program. Because Johnson Controls competitors were being reviewed, a strong ethical approach to the review process and a detailed technical knowledge of the product was needed. This resulted in all products being sourced on time and at or below the budgeted cost targets.

Managed the dual role of Engineering Manager for General Motors and representative of Johnson Controls in an ethical and effective way resulting in Johnson Controls being awarded three major interior sub-systems for the Chevy Trailblazer and GMC Envoy interior.

Platform Director

(1999 to 2004)

The Platform Director is the leader of a business segment within Johnson Controls with responsibility for platform profitability growth, customer satisfaction, new business quoting & contract negotiation, new product development, and manufacturing operations.

Led a platform team consisting of engineering, program management, advanced manufacturing, advanced quality, sales, and purchasing for the Ford F150 Large Truck Platform. This required strong leadership skills and a focus on customer satisfaction which resulted in Johnson Controls being awarded three major sub-systems on the 2004 Ford F150 Pickup Truck.

Instituted a process for tracking and closing open commercial issues for the Ford Mid-Size Sport Utility Vehicle Platform that resulted in the collection of over $23 million in past collectables ranging from 36 to 6 months in age. This also resulted in a promotion to the Large Truck Platform with a larger level of responsibility and sales turnover.

Led a platform team launching a new seating program for the 2001 Ford Ranger Pickup Truck. This resulted in meeting all performance, cost, and timing requirements and the team receiving a Corporate Merit Award.

Manager of Program Management

(1996 to 1999)

Led the startup of new Program Management and Engineering departments in the United Kingdom.

Staffed and trained new Program Management and Engineering departments in the use of the Johnson Controls Product Launch System. This required an accelerated pace of people development and the effective use of United States based resources that resulted in a United Kingdom based team that received a corporate merit award for the fist product launch they were responsible for. This success also led to additional business from Jaguar and new business from Rover Cars.

Led the product development and launch of the 1999 Jaguar S-Type Interior. This resulted in a product launch that met all standard launch measures, customer expectations, and a profit margin larger than Johnson Controls traditionally experienced.

Served on the senior management team responsible for developing division policy, local compensation packages, and the implementation of Johnson Controls standardized processes. This resulted in the successful completion of all staffing and financial plans in the first year of operation.

Led teams in multiple counties through the many challenges faced by varied cultures and time zones. Devised and implemented a communication process that resulted in all program goals being met or exceeded.
