Profile: Journalist with significant job experience in public health administration
Experience:
30+ years working in public and private behavioral and environmental health services in rural
and metropolitan areas of North Carolina. This included: community organizing, developing and
supervising programs in rural Gaston County, N.C., as well as metropolitan Mecklenburg County
Mental Health Department, the largest county in North Carolina.
1972-1983: Worked 10 years as a social-worker then administrator at Gaston County Mental
Health/Developmental Disabilities/Substance Abuse Area Program.
1983-1996: Was promoted within two years of move to Mecklenburg to reorganize county-wide
services for 1200 adults with severe mental illness. Using a $2.5 million Robert Woods Johnson
Foundation grant, reorganized and broadened the system of care through collaboration with
several agencies, a private hospital and housing corporation. This resulted in a 40 percent
decrease in hospitalizations and improved medical care for patients. Several other grants were
won and used to further improve the services over the next eight years. Local funding was
obtained to continue these services when grant funds ended.
1996-2004: Developed and directed the Community-Based Initiatives Division for eight years
which established partnerships with other agencies to broaden and improve services for common
consumers. One such project used a $4.5 million grant to move homeless mentally ill into
permanent housing with a 61 percent success rate. Created collaborative planning process
establishing the county's Homeless Services Network which accessed millions of dollars in funding
for the county. Other projects involved: domestic violence, care for the elderly, substance abuse,
childhood obesity, and health insurance for the working poor while serving as adjunct faculty at
University of North Carolina-Charlotte in the Department of Health & Human Services.
Over 21-year period in Mecklenburg County, acquired approximately $20 million in grant funds
with writing, research and leadership skills. Retired from Mecklenburg County in June, 2004.

Journalism Experience:
1996-2004:
Published several articles in professional magazines in my previous career, some of which
are listed below.
Wrote copy and performed voice-overs for the Health Department TV show, Healthy
Connections, a regional health education program airing on public TV stations
Produced briefing book on services for two departments for County Commissioners
2006- 2008:
Completed Journalism courses at Pima Community College (PCC): News Writing,
Advanced News Publishing, Photojournalism, Feature Writing, On-line Publication and
two Independent Study courses.
Completed Digital Field Shooting and Editing at Access Tucson in Tucson, Az.

Was hired as Editor-in-Chief of the Aztec Press, PCC s student newspaper, during Spring
semester, 2007, which included supervising news staff, writing articles, copy editing,
assisting with layout and photography
