VI. PRIOR RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

Fall 2000 EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

Sum 2001 GENERALIZABLE EFFECTS OF FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT TRAINING FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS

This study lead by Gretchen Jefferson, School Psychologist and Assistant Professor evaluated the general position

that teachers acquire basic behavior analytic skills through involvement in behavioral consultation. Forty teachers

participated in this 1 to 5 hour per participant study, depending upon group assignment. All teachers received two

thirty minute behavioral consultations, while half also received a 4 hour functional assessment and classroom

management inservice.

UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT BOULDER, UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER,

UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS, AND EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

Spr 1996 EVALUATION OF COMMUNITY MODELS OF ANGER MANAGEMENT FOR

Win 2000 ABUSIVE PARENTS AND DELINQUENT CHILDREN

These 4 grant funded research project spanning 3 1/2 years, initially under the supervision of W. Edward

Craighead, Ph.D., investigated the effects of community-based anger management program for parents self- or

court-referred for child abuse, or adolescents self- or court-referred for delinquency. Over 200 parents

participated in this 2 hour-long, 8 weekly-session project. Self-reported ethnic identity of parents indicated that

the sample is 50% Caucasian, 30% Latino/Hispanic, and 20% American Indian. The primary treatment consisted

of behavioral parent training; the secondary treatment consisted of anger management training (i.e.,

communication, problem solving, and empathy building). On these projects, I supervised twelve bachelor or

undergraduate-level staff.

UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS AND

UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER

Fall 1997 - EVALUATION OF PARENT TRAINING AND ANGER MANAG EMENT FOR PARENTS

Sum 1999 This 24-month long treatment outcome study initially under the supervision of Ronald Drabman, Ph.D., involved

two phases of evaluation. In phase one, the effects of a five -year-long, community-based parent training program

were investigated. In phase two, the curriculum was altered to include anger management components. It was

proposed that the high level of child abuse reports noted for participants requires more than just parent training, it

required the teaching of skills to improve interpersonal relations, empathy, and coping with stress. The results of

two years of head-to-head PT alone vs. PT with AM are being analyzed currently.

UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER

Fall 1997 EVALUATION OF ANXIETY AND DIABETES MELLITUS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

page 5 06/24/09

David B. Hatfield

Fall 1998 This research project under the supervision of Drs. Ron Drabman and James Sturges, and in collaboration with

pediatric endocrinology department, involved the assessment of adjustment to and adherence with dia betes

mellitus in children and adolescents. Data analysis indicated that moderate levels of anxiety noted for African

American participants improved aspects of diabetic control beyond those noted for motivational and

informational systems.

UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO

Fall 1995 - FAMILY-BASED PROSOCIAL COPING THERAPY WITH JUVENILE DELINQUENTS

Sum 1996 As a member of this team, I supervised undergraduate (20; 10 for independent study credit) and graduate students

(2) on two concurrent projects. In project one, we implemented an etiologic evaluation of youth offenders, youth

ages 10 to 17, and their families at a local district attorney s office. In the second project, we evaluated Family

Fall 1992 - Fall ANALYSIS OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE IN EVOKING MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR

1994 IN WOMEN WITH MENTAL RETARDATION

This master's thesis project under the supervision of Jon Bailey, Ph.D., investigated the potential for menstrual

cycles to adversely effect the rates of self-abuse and aggression in non-verbal females with mental retardation.

This applied, 3-stage behavior analysis project began with time-series and functional analyses (n=8), moved to

the investigation of the effects of oral contraceptives and the ingestion of anti-inflammatory medications on these

behaviors (n=7), and culminated in the first extended multi-element design analysis lasting 3 - 4 menstrual cycles

per client (n=4). Three of the participants in stage three showed stable interactions between menstrual phase and

operant condition. I supervised 2 graduate student therapists and 62 undergraduate student staff (43 for

independent study credit) on this project.

Spr 1994 - ESCALATING MALADAPTIVE RESPONSE CLASSES IN PERSONS WITH MENTAL RETARDATION

Sum 1994 This applied project under the supervision of Jon Bailey, Ph.D., investigated hierarchical maladaptive response

classes and the impact behavioral and medical interventions have on them. Individuals with mental retardation

and either atypical psychosis or complex seizure disorder were evaluated with time -series functional analyses for

seven months. Results indicated both the existence of response classes and individual-based differential

effectiveness of both the behavioral (operant) and medical interventions for all participants.

Spr 1994 - TOURETTE'S, MEDICATION, AND SYMPTOM CHANGE

Sum 1994 This applied project under the supervision of Jon Bailey, Ph.D., investigated the effects of varying types and

a useful tool in determining the optimal medication regimen.

Fall 1991 - INCREASING RECYCLING: DETERMINING RELEVANT FACTORS IN THE OFFICE ENVIRONMENT
