Manager, Software Engineering (2006 2010)
Managed the applications and systems for the loading and transformation of all content
for the MD Consult family of electronic products ( www.mdconsult.com,
www.nursingconsult.com, www.expertconsult.com ). These websites provide online access to
books, journals, citations, news, drug data and specialty publications for the
professional medical community. In collaboration with the business, led team which
developed application code in support of new business features. Used both agile and
waterfall software development techniques in support of new feature development. Developed
and monitored the content workflows and provided 2nd tier application support.
Led team through outsourcing of selected software development and support services.
Selected and hired both onshore and offshore contracting staff. Developed and executed
knowledge transition on existing applications for maintenance support and transitioned in-
house staff to new development activities. Succeeded in transforming the team from an
internal to a decentralized mix of internal and outsourced staff while continuing to
provide excellent customer service.
Directed and supported application development in multiple IT environments. Managed
porting of applications while consolidating hosting facilities to achieve cost reduction,
improved performance and reliability.
Provided supply chain management by evaluating vendor and internal/external product
supplier changes to determine impact on content, processes, workflow and technologies used
to provide data to electronic publishing platforms.
Led successful total technical re-architecting initiative that put in place an entirely
new content processing architecture for books. Converted the existing book player which
used static HTML files converted from Standardized Generalized Markup Language (SGML) to a
dynamically rendered XHTML from XML documents. The initiative included conversion and
ingestion of 400 medical textbooks into the new repository over a span of six months.
Set direction on application development strategy/architecture, managed the
implementation and provided 24/7 operational support and monitoring for a $3M electronic
product/platform ( www.boardcertifieddocs.com ). Migrated an existing alerting and email
notification function from WebLogic to WebSphere resulting in better reliability and
increased capacity which addressed limitations in saved search.
Launched a commercial subscription-based web application companion web site (
www.abmsdirectory.com ) supporting the professional accreditation product team.
Advised and helped business understand and assess impact of new content types and changes
to existing content feeds. Participated in business case development and estimated costs
and timelines for implementation and deployment of new application code and hardware.
Planned and executed upgrades for Oracle, Mark Logic, WebSphere and operating systems in
conjunction with application code releases for the XML repository. Performed release
management activities and coordinated with database and systems administrators. Reduced
and subsequently eliminated end user impact by reworking procedures and the application
code to support rolling releases.
Trained, mentored, and collaborated with the off-shore maintenance team to reduce errors
and outages in content processing of news article feeds and journal issue processing.
Identified and prioritized enhancement requests and defects to code and scripts based on
root cause analysis. Resulted in reassignment of all five editorial headcount to other
activities and reduced cycle time from an average of four days to less than 3 hours for a
journal issue. This also reduced the count of journal issues held up for reprocessing from
an average of ten per week to less than three per month.
Team Lead, Content Management (20002005)
Provided subject matter expertise and coordinated with consultant team contracted to re-
architect and replace existing content management system (CMS) with a new CMS.
Re-engineered all backend processes for the transformation and storage of content used in
customer-facing websites. Coordinated changes in processing, workflows, and rendering to
transition from SGML to Extensible Markup Language (XML) for each distinct content type.
Led initiative and provided technology direction improving the sequencing of the workflow
and processes required for local content authoring. Implementation in a new Vignette
content management system (CMS) led to increased reliability and reduction of support
calls.
Scrum master and technical lead (team of ten) consisting of data architect, project
manager, business analysts, architects and software developers which constructed a data
warehouse for royalty and usage tracking and reporting. Designed the reports, data tables
and implemented the data acquisition and transformation (ETL) using Oracle warehouse
builder and Business Objects.
Implemented a revised process for transforming and loading journal citations into an
Oracle database. Lead development team in porting the XML loader from WebLogic to
WebSphere and modifying Java code to address changes in the XML DTD used for the journal
citations. Added in the ability to support UTF-8 character set and specialized character
entities.

delivering web pages using Oracle and Netscape servers.

adjusted to changes in inputs as DTD specifications were modified. Reprocessed and
reloaded entire set of books and journals to adjust to changes in time for launch of the
product.
