Dissertation:

Title: Equity-Efficiency Interdependence in Emission Allowances Markets and

Its Implications for Climate Policy

Chapter 1: Income Effects and Efficient Allocation of Allowances in Carbon

Markets. This chapter uses a two-sector general equilibrium model of a

country s economy to investigate the relationship between wealth

distribution and optimal level of a cap shaped by income effects of

alternative permits allocations in the context of a carbon market. This result

is then used to identify the efficient distribution of permits given an overall

level of emissions established by the regulator.

Chapter 2: International Environmental Agreements: Stability, Equity and

Efficiency. This chapter analyzes International Environmental Agreements

(IEA) for greenhouse gases and applies coalitional game theory to depict

distributions of allowances across countries that render an IEA both optimal

(efficient) and stable (equitable).

Chapter 3: Regional versus Global International Environmental Agreements

for CO2 Emissions Reduction. I conduct here a welfare evaluation and

comparison of global versus regional environmental agreements based on

the potential trade-off between stability and efficiency derived in Chapter 2.
