Central IT agency of a major US City (New York City Department of IT and Telecom (DoITT))

3 month(s)

CitiServ angency infrastructure consolidation

Project Description:I am currently engaged at the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telcommunications (DoITT) as SWAT team lead for the city's CitiServ project, the objective of which is to consolidate the majority of all of the city's government agencies aging IT infrastructure into a shared hosting environment running under VMWare vSphere 5. My role is to evaluate and assess the infrastructure of specifically targeted city agencies, determine what can be consolidated or requires remediation in order to do so, make appropriate recommendations as trusted adviser to DoITT, and then lead the required migration resources to move the systems if directed.

06/2012 - 09/2012

Major US-based Financial Services Firm (Broadridge Financial Services)

4 month(s)

Major European Financial Services Firm (AXA)

3 month(s)

SCON Assessment

Project Description:Performed Phase 1 assessment of 1200 systems for the North American division of a major European financial services firm and computed end-state requirements using IBM's SCONRAT tool.

12/2011 - 04/2012

Regional Wireless Services Carrier (US Cellular / AMDOCS)

5 month(s)

AMDOCS Implementation

Project Description:At US Cellular, IBM is engaged with Israeli wireless industry CRM software firm AMDOCS in implementing the company's next-generation 4G LTE extranet and billing system which is scheduled to come online in December of 2012. I performed in the role of VMWare and Linux/Wintel architect, where I implemented and designed the infrastructure for vSphere 5, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows Server 2008R2 for the Non-production and Production environment running the application on IBM xSeries blade servers.

07/2011 - 11/2011

Large Health Management Organization (WellPoint)

5 month(s)

Data Center Consolidation

Project Description:At Wellpoint, IBM ITS partnered with our Strategic Outsourcing division to provide a comprehensive data center migration solution for Lumenos, a company which had been acquired in 2005 along with legacy computing assets. I was assigned the role of Lead Migration Architect and implemented Platespin Protect and Platespin Migrate infrastructure, leading a team of approximately a dozen IBM US and India employees running daily P2V jobs and re-mediating Wintel and Linux-based systems in a triage-based environment.

03/2011 - 06/2011

Large Petroleum Industry / Offshore Drilling Consulting Services Firm (Baker Hughes Inc.)

4 month(s)

Data Center Consolidation

Project Description:At BHI, IBM Integrated Technology Services partnered with our Strategic Outsourcing and Datacenter Hosting divisions to provide a comprehensive datacenter migration solution for over 400 systems hosted at Verizon datacenters in Maryland and in Ireland to our facilities in Poughkeepsie, New York. My role was specifically to design a standardized build process and template for Linux, Solaris and Wintel systems to reside at IBM facilities and also to provide a virtualization and P2V solution for legacy Sun SPARC systems running Solaris 8 and 9 to newer Oracle SPARC T-series and M-Series systems.

10/2010 - 02/2011

State Government Multi-Agency Institutional Customer (Georgia Technology Authority (State of Georgia))

5 month(s)

GTA Multi-Agency Data Consolidation Effort

Project Description:At the Georgia Technology Authority (GTA) I was part of a large team of IBM system architects and specialists that was tasked with the consolidation of 1000+ servers in 13 distinct government agencies in the State of Georgia.

My involvement was in the role of migration architect and it involved coordination between multiple vendors as well as various agencies within the State of Georgia including the office of the CIO at the Georgia Technology Authority. My concentration was in the area of providing intrusion detection services and security logging for virtualized Windows servers that were Internet-facing, such as for the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) and the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS).

03/2010 - 09/2010

Large Mulitnational Telecommunications Company (Telefonica AG)

7 month(s)

International Datacenter Migration

Project Description:IBM was engaged in a large, multinational datacenter consolidation for Telefonica on behalf of one of its large hosting customers, MAPFRE, a large Latin American insurance company. As an Infrastructure Architect my role was to assist in the migration in devising solutions for accelerating the P2V portion of the engagement and resolving numerous critsits during the migration phase in Brazil for legacy Wintel-based systems.

02/2010 - 02/2010

Large SMB in Marketing Analytics (The NPD Group)

1 month(s)

Project Description:I was asked on behalf of IBM's Strategic Outsourcing division to examine a Red Hat Linux environment on commodity hardware being used by the customer ($200M+ annual revenue) to perform Extract/Transform/Load (ETL) operations using Ab Initio for possible performance degradation issues and if the environment was properly optimized for Linux. After determining the problem was architectural and application-based and not misconfiguration, I developed a go-forward plan for the customer to examine their volumetrics to see if their current hardware would handle their expected load (4Billion rows insert monthly / 100 million row extract / 1000x jobs + transform).

I conferred with Ab Initio industry experts to determine that the customer was not using good practices in its use of the product by overcommitment of the system in terms of the amount of concurrent processes they were allowing and by using a custom scheduler instead of a commercial one. Recommended monolithic test on large UNIX system to determine relative levels of performance against a "normalized" Linux configuration on production workloads.

12/2009 - 01/2010

Large Multinational Brokerage Firm (Morgan Stanley / Smith Barney)

2 month(s)

Project Description:At this customer, IBM GBS enlisted the help of the ITS&A group within IBM GTS to provide the Infrastructure Architecture expertise into helping the customer formulate its strategy for assuming and integrating the legacy environment of a recent acquisition of another brokerage business from a large retail multinational bank. We were asked to assess the level of complexity for approximately 50 applications in the legacy environment and what it would take to re-platform them and make architectural changes needed to move them into the customer's hosted IBM datacenter in Poughkeepsie. Our work at this customer is currently ongoing.

09/2009 - 11/2009

Large Aerospace/Defense Industry Contractor (Lockheed Martin Space Systems)

3 month(s)

Project Description:At this high-security defense industry customer I worked with another ITS&A Sr. Architect to perform a Virtualization Assessment of 400 servers at one of their larger business units. Originally the engagement was designed to use the VSV Methodology used by the SCON group but due to various customer issues we were required to use a different tool, PlateSpin Recon.

This required adapting IBM methodology as well as coming up to speed on a tool that was not normally utilized in our usual delivery method. I created a virtual lab environment to test and learn the tool and we were able to deliver the Assessment on time, this despite constant setbacks at the customer due to technical issues with the tool and the customer's network/applications and a challenging high security environment that required a "sandbox" which had to be used remotely and severely limited our activities and ability to gather information.

07/2009 - 08/2009

Ivy-League University (Brown University)

2 month(s)

Project Description:At this large educational institutional customer I was asked by IBM BCRS to write restore procedures for the customer's Linux environment. Initially these were intended to be manual procedures that would cover multiple versions of Linux at the customer's primary datacenter. Instead, I came up with a plan to create a Linux-based virtual machine which would be SAN replicated to the recovery site that would restore the Linux systems in an automated fashion, eliminating the need for complex manual scripts that could introduce human error and minimize the need for trained Linux experts during a disaster event. The virtual machine was tested during a test event over the summer and successfully was used to restore the customer environment.

04/2009 - 06/2009

Large Multinational Insurance Company (Zurich Insurance)

3 month(s)

Project Description:At this customer I again worked with the Datacenter Relocation Services SPL in a large migration of a Baltimore datacenter to Chicago. I was instrumental in convincing upper management at this customer in abandoning a high-risk "Lift and Shift" strategy that potentially could have caused a disastrous business continuity failure. Rather than to "lift and shift" their storage environment over 800 miles via truck, we built a business case for purchasing new storage and replicating their environment at Baltimore and moving the copied new storage to Chicago before the final move.

01/2009 - 04/2009

$1B Voice Over IP Services Company (CBEYOND)
