AKZO NOBEL COATINGS INC., Columbus, OH and Birmingham, AL 1998 – 2008
A $140 million division of Akzo Nobel Inc. that manufactures 5.0+ million gallons of architectural, durable goods, interior
automotive and specialty plastics coatings and 2.0+ million gallons of polyester and epoxy resins.
Plant Manager
Responsibilities:
Managed and provide leadership to the overall production operations team including: Coatings and Resins
Manufacturing, Environmental, Health & Safety, Scheduling & Capacity Planning, Quality Control, Packaging,
Purchasing, Warehouse, Shipping & Receiving Operations, Exports, Engineering & Maintenance and Customer
Service/Order Entry at the Columbus and Birmingham facilities. Developed, approved, and managed production
operations ($17 million) and capital ($1.5 million) budgets. Seven direct reports, 40 indirect reports and 135+ hourly
union production employees at the two facilities.
Business Unit Steering Committee member responsible for developing, communicating and meeting overall production
operations business goals and objectives in coordination with the Sales, Technical, Accounting and HR Departments.
Compliance with all Federal, State, Local and Akzo Nobel Corporate regulatory compliance requirements including EPA,
OSHA, PSM, DOT, NFPA, risk assessment, site security, etc. in a hazardous material, Class 1, Div 1 environment.
Responsible for labor relations, grievance resolution and contract negotiations. Ensure proper staffing, training and
development of the organization and adherence to company polices and procedures.
Accomplishments:
Successful start-up of new $32 million addition to the Columbus facility in 1998.
Promoted and assumed responsibility for the Birmingham facility in 2004. Developed and completed a four year capital
project/process improvement plan that streamlined material flow, opened up floor space for the addition of two new
manufacturing cells, brought the site into HSE compliance and integrated operations with the Columbus facility.
Lost Time Injury (LTI) accident incidents dropped from an average of 7/year to 1/year. Three plus years with zero LTI
accidents at Columbus and two plus years at Birmingham. Initiated HSE Incident Reporting System and Behavior Based
Safety to reduce accident incident rates.
Productivity as measured by Gallons/Man-Hour increased by 22% at Columbus and 28% at Birmingham over the past
four years resulting in $400K/year labor savings.
Eliminated a process bottleneck of our largest product through the addition of, and reorganization of, raw material and
intermediate storage tanks in 2007.
Decreased hazardous waste by 15% in 2008 resulting in $175K savings.
Reduced product lead-time from 15 days to 10, 5 or 3 days depending upon product type.
Lead negotiator for three Teamster Union contracts resulting in consolidating job classifications and streamlining contract
work rules allowing for greater work force flexibility.
Initiated Six Sigma/Lean program in 2007. Fifteen Green Belt Projects completed saving $250K.Green Belt certified.

Production Manager
Responsibilities:
Managed production operations that included batch mixing, semi-automatic and automatic packaging, materials
management and EH&S in a hazardous material, Class 1 Div 1 environment. Four direct reports and 63 union hourly
production employees. Preparation and adherence to budget and capital plan. Staffing and capacity planning.
Accomplishments:
Utilizing Lean and Kaizen systems manpower needs were reduced by 19%, on-time delivery increased from 91% to 99%
and pounds produced increased by 9%.
Initiated T.E.M. on automated packaging equipment and 5S philosophy to plant house keeping.
MENASHA CORPORATION, Columbus, Ohio 1991–1995
A $36 million division of Menasha Corporation that manufactured home appliance control overlays, flexible electronic circuits
and product identification labels.
Production Operations Coordinator
Responsibilities:
Managed overall production operations, quality control, materials and EH&S. Five direct reports and 75 non-union hourly
production employees. Preparation and adherence to operations budget and capital plan.
Accomplishments:
Reduced operating costs by $1MM in two years by increasing productivity and reducing scrap through standardizing
training, repairing and/or replacing worn out equipment, and implementing cellular plant layout changes.
BIC CORPORATION, (Special Markets Division), Clearwater, Florida. 1985–1990
Plastic extrusion and injection molding, assembly, screen-printing and packaging of BIC products.
