PROJECTS:

Multivariate data analysis of crime pattern within Franklin County in Columbus (March ~ June 2007)

- Data includes 1372 rates of 7 crimes, 2548 demographic variables of 13 types, and 392 location data

from 196 Columbus census tracts.

- Used R to explore the pattern of crime rate and its relationship with demographic variables based on

multivariate plot, multivariate hypothesis test and comparison of the statistics.

- Used R to predict the crime rate using demographic variables by applying the multivariate regression,

the results agreed with observations and wrote project report using Microsoft Word.

Logistic Analysis of Reasons of High Robbery Rate in Columbus (March ~ June 2008).

- Transformed the continuous 196 robbery rate into binary data, built the logistic regression models

applying backward, forward, and both direction method.

- Selected the best parsimonious logistic regression model based on BIC, explored the associations

between high robbery rate and the attributes of the census tracts, checked the fitness of the model using

residual plots, Deviance, cook’s distance and dfbeta.

- Wrote the project report using Microsoft Word and made the PowerPoint for the presentations.

Time Series Analysis of Sea Surface level (September ~December 2006)

- Collected and built a geographic database for the decadal sea surface height using SAS. Developed SAS

program to clean up the data for every location after analyzing the mean and variance.

- Built linear regression model combined with the ARIMA model based on the ACF, PACF, AIC,

produced mean height over the locations for every 10 days during 10 years.

- Interpreted the model to extract the trend, the seasonality and the dependence of sea level changes based

on the P-value, confidence interval and normal Q-Q plot of residual and wrote the project report.

Clinical trial analysis (September ~ December 2007)

- Performed two one-sided t-test and computed the confidence interval to infer bioequivalence of drugs.

- Based on the ANOVA table using SAS software applying Dunnett’s method, stepdown method to study

the Dose-Response Efficacy.

- Used Holm’s test, Hochberg’s stepup method to test the efficacy improvement of drug for multiple

alternative primary endpoints.

Design and Analysis of 4 factors Lentil Growth Experiment (January ~ March 2008)

- Designed the experiment, chose the factors and its level and computed the sample size.

- Used SAS software to analyze the effects of factors based on ANOVA Table, P-value, hypothesis test,

interaction plot applying submodel method.

- Used SAS software to analyze the effects of factors based on contrast normality plot and Voss-Wang

confidence interval.

EXPERIENCES:

Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

Research Associate (September 2002 ~ March 2009)

Worked on satellite radar altimetry data to study the decal inland water level change

2

Manman ZHANG

- Developed the algorithm to differentiate the inland water from other type of land coverage based on the

statistical analysis of the decal water height measurement from satellite radar altimetry.

- Tested and optimized the algorithm in Manitoba, southwest Ontario, Amazon River Basin and

Southwest Taiwan.

- The developed methodology was used in the 1997 Red River Flood to detect the flood extent and the

snow coverage to improve the flood model and mitigate the flood.

- The results were published in 9 magazines in USA, Canada and Germany.

Worked on assessment of tsunami modeling

- Analyzed the model data in NETCDF array format using MATLAB, computed the correlation of the

water height computed from model and observed from satellite altimetry and tide gauge.

- Used GMT to make the 2-Dimenational and 3-Dimentional plot of water height computed from tsunami

model, and water height observed from satellite altimetry and tide gauge.

- Analyzed the tidal component of the observed signal from satellite altimetry and tide gauge using three

methods including Fast Fourier Transform technique, Caldwell detide software and global tidal model.

- Produced two publications with results of study.

Huazhong University of Science & Technology, P. R. CHINA

Research Assistant (September 1999-June 2002)

- Researched the project sponsored by National Science and Technology Key Laboratory Foundation,

analyzed the Mechanical Performance of a Multilayer Vibration Isolation System for a factory in

Wuhan, using ANSYS and MATLAB software.

- Took charge of modeling, computation and analysis of mode, wrote research summary report. Received

recognition for submitted report, completed the task assigned by the foundation. The suggestions to

improve the design had been used by the factory.
