Position: Observer
I enjoyed observership in the division of pulmonary critical care at the
University of Virginia. It was an incredible experience because I got an
opportunity to observe morning rounds and out-patient pulmonary clinic both
at university hospital in Charlottesville, VA and at Augusta Medical Center
in Fishersville, VA. My duties included taking history, pulling lab works
and imaging studies, making patient notes and follow-up care. This
experience helped me to get a basic idea about urban US health care and
improved my clinical knowledge and communication skills.

Position: Extern Doctor
It was a great experience to work as an extern in hazard ARH hospital. I
worked with Larry Bart Francis, MD for 7 weeks and with Darian Ratliff, MD
for 5 weeks. During this period, I enjoyed working in both in-patient and
out-patient facilities including floor, ER, ICU, CCU, clinic, nursing home,
psychiatric unit and rehabilitation unit. My average duty hours were around
40-45 and my duties included taking history, doing physical and diagnostic
work-up, pulling lab works and x-ray studies, writing SOAP notes and follow-
up care of the patients.

Position: Extern Doctor
I worked as an extern with Sujata Gutti, MD neurology at her clinic in
Pikeville, KY. It was a great out-patient experience which helped me to
expand my knowledge about common neurological diseases such as, all kinds
of neuropathies, strokes and headaches. -During this period I observed many
nerve conduction and EMG studies. It was my first out-patient US clinical
experience and was my first direct interaction with American health-care

Worked as a houseman doctor where I was responsible for handling 20-30
patients in medicine general ward and 10-12 patients in medical ICU daily.

Position: Intern doctor
Completed rotations in various departments including General Medicine,
General Surgery, Obs & Gyn, Orthopedic and community medicine 3 months
each. -During 3 month medicine rotations, I dealt with common medical
problems and Performed various medical procedures like urinary
catheterization,thoracentesis, paracentesis, nasogastric tube insertion and
IV access both at floor and ICU and actively participated in weekly case
presentation and seminars. I worked in the ER for two weeks and dealt with
emergencies ranging from minor trauma to grave heart attacks. - In addition
during my internship rotation in internal medicine, a devastating flood
ravaged my home town, which forced me to work as a chief medical officer of
the medical relief team in the field.

Worked as a research assistant for the project: "Prevention of sex
determination, female feticide and female negligence in low socio-economic
class" under the guidance of Dr. R.K. Bansal MD, MPH, and Chief of the
department of Community Medicine.
We studied approximately 200 people for their thoughts, awareness and
opinions regarding sex-determination and female infanticide. My duties
included collecting data, making charts, evaluating and concluding based on
data collection.
Conducted counseling sessions for parents and provided them with charts and
posters in order to increase the awareness among them. -This project got
published by Journal of Community Medicine.
