PROFILE
Mechanical Engineer with over 10 years of experience in the development of
engineered systems. Performed finite element analysis and fatigue
calculations to recommend design changes in heavy truck suspensions.
Helped to analyze implantable medical devices such as orthopedic spinal
fusion implants, stents and vascular filters. Developed innovative plastic
geared actuators including a 500:1 reduction ratio planetary gear system
and an energy management system for a steering column lock. Managed an
assembly area relocation. Managed cost-out projects. Validated cost-out
ideas to mitigate risk by designing and building samples, evaluating test
results and conducting pilot runs. Created test plans, drawings and test
reports. Designed (using SolidWorks), analyzed, tested and troubleshot a
pneumatic test stand for child-powered scooters and bicycles. Skilled in
project management and implementation, creative thinking, problem solving,
mechanical design and numerical analysis. Technical skills include 3D solid
modeling (SolidWorks), engineering stress analysis, engineering
calculations, and tolerance stack-ups. B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical
Concentration) from Walla Walla University.

SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Developed a new under-hood gear box to pull a cable. Started with the
required length of cable travel, actuation time and given motor speed to
calculate the required over-all gear ratio. Determined intervening gear
ratios. Designed plastic gears and gear pairs having adequate center
distances and contact ratios using SolidWorks. Designed the housing and
cover. Turned solid models over to mold maker. Assembled prototype.
Result: Produced prototype on schedule and within budget.
Designed a 500:1 reduction ratio planetary gear system. Performed planetary
device calculations to determine the correct configuration of gear teeth
and fit of each component. Generated gear teeth profiles, constructed CAD
models of each gear and assembled gears together in the CAD model. Results:
Retained a tier 1 automotive supplier.
Produced a prototype a for a new air/diesel vapor valve. Purchased high-
flow valves and modeled a valve concept based on valves ordered. Produced
detailed drawings and collaborated with manufacturing engineering to
determine schedule for prototype production. Communicated with machinists
to determine material availability and to produce a prototype valve.
Results: Produced a prototype on schedule and within budget.
Recommended design changes in suspension components. Analyzed
suspensions/components and evaluated the stress contours/deflections.
Formulated changes based on finite element results and knowledge of
mechanical stress. Results: Saved the company an estimated 4 years of
development time and an estimated $100,000 in prototyping/testing costs.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Design Engineer, Oiles America Corporation, Concord, NC
2012-2012
. Trained on Oiles' steering gear rack yokes and rack bushings, steering
systems and surface metrology.
Process Engineer (Contract), GE, East Flat Rock, NC
2012- 2012
. Moved Lighting Controls assembly area to new location. This involved
the prioritization of daily tasks, the sequencing of events and
estimating the duration of each event in order to create a timeline
encompassing all phases of the project. Worked as part of a team to
execute tasks in a timely manner.
. Assisted in switching to new material resource planning system.
Cost-Out Engineer (Contract), GE, East Flat Rock, NC
2011- 2012
. Managed cost-out projects by creating timelines and test plans and
executing in a timely manner.
. Validated cost out ideas by building samples, evaluating test results
and conducting pilot runs.
. Ensured that all relevant aspects of project and product are accounted
for and documented (design, photometrics, tooling, testing, quality
assurance, manufacturing etc.).
Mechanical Engineer, Zike LLC, Greenville, SC
2010 - 2011
. Designed, analyzed, built, tested and troubleshot a fixture to
validate new and existing designs.
. Created new design concepts for child-powered bicycles and scooters
using Solid Works.
. Analyzed new and existing designs for strength, fatigue and factor of
safety requirements.
Engineering Consultant (Contract), WJH Engineering Consultants,
Chattanooga, TN 2009 - 2010
. Assisted in the analysis of implantable bio-medical devices such as
stents, orthopedic spinal fusion inserts and vascular filters using
HyperMesh and Abaqus.
. Assisted in the development of prototypes of a bio-absorbable
implantable device along with the delivery system.
. Produced solid models and conceptual drawings using SolidWorks &
Pro/Engineer.
