SUMMARY OF CREDENTIALS
. Senior metallurgist with 10 years working experience in heat treatment
of carbon steel, material processing, characterization, and failure
analysis.
. Master degree in Materials Science.
. Expertise in microstructural characterization, heat treatment,
evaluation of the surface and bulk mechanical properties for various
materials.
. Hands-on skills in operating SEM with EDS, hardness testing, chemical
etching, and metallurgical preparation of the samples.
. Knowledge of various standards such as ASTM and AISI.
. Ability to work both in a team environment and a solo explorer.
. Good at writing technical report.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
06/2009-Present Metallurgist and Guest Scientist
NIST (National Institute of
Standard and Technology)
Energy Institute, George
Washington University, Washington DC.
Duties and responsibilities
. Responsible for the projects sponsored by the leading diesel engine
company.
. Develop advanced surface technology to reduce energy loss for diesel
engine components.
Achievements
Develop a novel technology to fabricate surface texture on large curved
surfaces for the first time. A DOE project was completed successfully
within a very tight time frame, which kept the continuous funding from
DOE.
09/2004-10/2008 Metallurgist
University of Windsor, Windsor, Canada,
NSERC/General Motors of Canada/ Industrial
Research Chair (IRC) in
Tribology of Lightweight Materials, Mechanical,
Automotive & Materials
Engineering
Duties and responsibilities
. In charge of the flag ship project of the Industrial Research Chair
(IRC) in Tribology of Lightweight Materials sponsored by the GM and
NSERC aimed to improve automotive engine efficiency and emission.
. Perform failure analysis of engine components and engine grade
materials.
. Responsible for the characterization of micro-structure and mechanical
properties of the casting aluminum alloy developed by General Motor
for the light weight engines.
Achievements
. Develop a chemical etching process to remove the aluminum from the
alloy leaving the Si phase on the surface for additional wear
resistance. Such surface treatment has strong interfacial bonding as
well as enhanced wear resistance.

08/2001- 08/2004 Metallurgist
Engineering Materials Processing Center, Jiuquan Iron & Steel
Co. Ltd., China
Duties and responsibilities
. Develop self-lubricated metallic composites aimed to be used under
extreme environmental conditions using power metallurgy synthesis.
. Develop composites applied to steel plate processing assembly for
Jiuquan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd.
. Perform the metallurgical characterization of the phase structure and
microstructure.
Achievements
The new composites were successfully used by Lanzhou Advanced
Materials Ltd. and Jiuquan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., which boosted
revenue of the lab for 1 million in Chinese Yuan.
10/1998 - 07/2000 Visiting Scholar
The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tohoku
University, Japan,
07/1989 - 10/1998 Metallurgist
Lanzhou University, Lanzhou Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., (later
combined with Jiuquan Iron & Steel, China,
Duties and responsibilities
. Heat treatment of carbon steel.
. In charge of mechanical evaluation of ferrous materials.
Achievements
. The relationship between the alloying elements on mechanical property
of Co3Ti alloy was established and Co3Ti with 2.5 wt% Fe was firstly
found to have the optimum high temperature mechanical properties. The
microstructures and their effects on the shape memory property of the
CuAlBe alloy were identified.
