. Synthesized AlN-SiC alloy crystals, AlN and ScN bulk crystals and thin

films by high temperature sublimation and chemical vapor deposition; made

the process more reproducible and achieved larger-size and better-quality

crystals than previous researchers in my group

. Confirmed the high crystalline quality using various characterization

techniques such as SEM, AFM, XRD and defect-selective wet chemical

etching

. Collaborated with Department of Chemistry at KSU to synthesize

nanoparticle metal oxide catalysts by a modified sol-gel procedure;

characterized them by BET and XRD, and proved the large surface area,

small particle size and favorable pore structures of nanoparticles in

comparison to microparticles

. Evaluated and compared the performance of nanoparticle metal oxide

catalysts and corresponding microparticle catalysts for the oxidation of

methanol in a fixed-bed reactor; demonstrated nanoparticle catalysts had

higher activity and stability than microparticles by achieving the same

conversion at temperatures approximately 100 C lower

. Modeled and simulated a multifunctional reactor - PSR (pressure swing

reactor, which combines pressure swing adsorption and chemical reaction

in a single reactor) using an advanced process modeling, simulation and

optimization software - gPROMS, to provide decision support in process

design and process operation

. Optimized the PSR process using gPROMS, and achieved a ~10% increase in

the reactant conversion

. Designed and assembled a PSR system; carried out a sample reaction to

verify the accuracy of the modeling results, which were within the 15%

error range
