LEGAL EXPERIENCE

Counselor at Law Office of Alisa J. Kim

****-****; 2011-Present

Court appearances in criminal and civil - client intake and counseling, case management, mandatory

settlement conferences, prove-up hearings, judgment debtor exams, depositions, long cause hearings,

unlawful detainer trials, legal research and writing, drafting and filing motions and pleadings

As an appearance attorney, I am adept at assessing the essential of a case and the parties’ respective

position. Oftentimes, I am assigned appearances no more than 24-hours in advance. On assignments, I

establish professional relationships with judicial officers, staff, colleagues and opposing counsel. On a

timely basis, I manage multiple appearances in several different venues, review my notes and fashion them

into cogent and detailed results usually within an hour’s turnaround time. In criminal court, I appear at

arraignments, pretrial conferences, court trials, expungement and bail forfeiture hearings. In civil court, I

appear at case management conferences, settlement conferences, mediations, court trials (debt collection,

prove-up hearings, unlawful detainer), and in law and motion hearings. I also conduct judgment debtor

examinations and defend depositions.

JG, P.C. Business & Corporate Law

2008-2011

My work focused on startups, business transactions, entity formation, maintenance, and dissolution. I

designed, implemented and maintained systems for corporate compliance and governance of corporate

entities. In addition, I provided counsel and legal support to clients through analysis of business and legal

issues, document review and legal research and writing and also assistance in mergers and acquisitions.

Office of the Public Defender of the City and County of San Francisco

2000-2005

Initially recruited for the Legal Research Unit, I performed legal research and writing of memoranda,

motions and appeals, and presented oral arguments before the San Francisco Superior Court - Appellate

Division.

I served in the Misdemeanor Unit where I handled the Master Misdemeanor Arraignment calendar, providing

defendants with an overview of what to expect in court, as well as conducting interviews of those both in-

custody and out of custody. I appeared with clients at their pretrial conferences and court-mandated progress

reports for those ordered to diversion programs. I developed and implemented a program for clients to

resolve cases pre-trial and counseled and assisted clients in resolving outstanding bench warrant issues.

I provided coverage for attorneys by appearing on their behalf of all of the Misdemeanor departments as well

as staffing both Mentor Court and Drug Court at various times. A particularly favorite assignment of mine

for its challenges and autonomy was Extradition Court, where I was appointed to represent fugitives from

out-of-state. Most of these apppointments lasted less than a month, but for clients who elected to fight

extradition (as opposed to waiving it), there was considerable effort put into contacting the agencies in the

state where the client was wanted and drafting motions for bail reduction or release on own recognizance,

and consequently, many of them took several months to resolve.

As a Deputy Public Defender, I learned direct representation in the criminal justice system, in contrast to

representing client on their criminal appeals. I developed interviewing skills, became proficient in dealing

with the public and navigating the bureaucracies at the local and state levels, all while ministering to a

diverse clientele. Consequently, I have well-honed oral and written communication skills as well as the

ability to assess clients’ needs and to negotiate dispositions satisfactorily.

Sixth District Appellate Program

1992-2000

First District Appellate Project

1991-2000

As appointed counsel to represent post-conviction indigent clients on their appeals, I reviewed transcripts

(the record of the lower court proceedings), performed legal research and writing necessary for the

preparation of appellate briefs, motions, writs and/or petitions, and presented oral arguments before the

California State Court of Appeal in the First and Sixth Appellate Districts.
