Education

December 1996 Master of Science in Engineering Management

University of Missouri, Rolla, MO

May 1995 Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineer

University of Missouri, Rolla, MO

Patents

• Motor/Generator Stator Coil Cooling – Designed a method to manufacture coils which increases

the surface area that allows for improved cooling.

• Locomotive Control – Designed a control system that employs asymmetric sized engines to

maximize the engines life and reduce overall fuel consumption.

• 3400 Gas Cylinder Head – Designed a new cylinder head with improved cooling and stiffness to

handle the severe environment of natural gas combustion.

• Piston Cooling Gallery – Designed new piston cooling gallery that increased oil velocity thus

lowering piston temperatures.

Professional Experience/Projects

April 2010-October 2012 Engineering Project Team Lead (Low Voltage Rotors and Stators,)

Caterpillar, Peoria, IL

• Identified and selected the supplier base for the vertical integration for the D7E motor and

paver generator programs.

• Identified and selected the machine suppliers and processes for the D7E motor and paver generator

programs.

• Solved warranty issues related to the D7E generator, including high torque issues, phase to phase

shorts, phase to ground shorts, and longevity issues. Patent filed for new cooling method.

November 2006-April 2010 Engineering Project Team Lead (Progress Rail,) Caterpillar, Peoria,

IL

• Developed concept design and wrote specification for a new concept line haul locomotive (PR43C)

using 2 engines, a C18 and a C175-16. Patent filed for new control system architecture.

• Led design, prototype production, pilot production, and development of PR43C locomotive

• Sold 2 pilot locomotives to Norfolk Southern for $1.6 million each.

• Developed electrical schematic for all electrical systems for locomotive.

• Wrote control system for engines controlling traction and parasitic loads.

• Google PR43C, NS4000, NS4001, or PRS4003 for more information.

June 2003-November 2006 Senior Design Engineer (Cylinder Pack,) Caterpillar, LEC

• Designed and led new piston design team with Kolbenschmidt for a single piece forged piston.

Piston blank is machined, then rolled to form cooling gallery. Cost reduction was in excess of $6

million per year.

• Analyzed and implemented new piston design for 3500 piston that eliminated pin seizures, saving

$5 million per year in warranty.

• Analyzed and implemented design solution for 3600 piston skirt seizures, saving $1 million in

warranty per year and reduced cost by $250k per year.

• Developed new piston cooling gallery concept that forces cooling oil to rotate radially, increasing

surface speed thus improving heat rejection. Patent awarded for design concept.

June 2000-June 2003 Senior Design Engineer (Cylinder Head and Valve Train,)

Caterpillar, LEC

• Designed new cylinder head and led team to implement it into production. This design earned a

patent for its innovative structural and cooling concept and reduced warranty by $2.5 million per

year.

• Designed and led prototype tool production for a new gas cylinder head.

• Designed new cylinder head with water cooled seat inserts. This design reduced valve temperatures

and reduced warranty by $2 million per year.

June 1999-June 2000 Project Engineer, Raytheon Systems, Waco, TX

• Design, analyzed, and led production for structural intercostals and beams for telescope equipment.

Procured bids for low-cost manufacturing of unique parts and components.

• Wrote memo to Navy for cost benefits on C-130 AMP. Bid for new C-130 conversions was awarded

to Ratheon.

December 1996-June 1999 Design Engineer, Northrop Grumman Commercial Aircraft,

Dallas TX

CRISP: Cost Reduction Incentive Savings Program

• Designed and analyzed aluminum monolithic machined vertical rib, UARRSI investment casting

ditch door, aluminum monolithic machined horizontal trailing edge panels, and rudder composite

skin.

• Organized and implemented design approach for rudder sub-structure.

• Liaison to Boeing for new designs, manufacturing processes, and quality control.

• Liaison to suppliers, ensured product quality and implemented new designs.

NEAT: Nacelle Engine Affordability Team

• Conducted producibility and cost reduction studies.

• Investigated and evaluated nonconformance parts and assemblies and provided corrective actions to

meet the MDC/C-17 contract requirements.

• Supported manufacturing by resolving discrepancies during machining and assembly.

• Designed composite and metallic structures. Designed intake duct, load sharing frame, and hinge

line for nacelle: nacelle cast titanium bumper fittings; and redesigned thermal blankets on nacelle.

May 1995-December 1996 Graduate Research Assistant, Rock Mechanics Explosives Research

Center, University of Missouri, Rolla, MO

• Worked with Department of Navy: designed, analyzed, and built Bomb Disposal System.

• Designed, analyzed, and built jet pump that was used in cleaning of old bomb ordinance.

• Designed and built test platforms for lab experiments.

• Responsible for lab equipment preparation, operation, and undergraduate student employees.
