Columbus State Community College, Columbus, Ohio, Associates Degree in Architecture

The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, College of Architecture, I attended two years and with my work

experience and Associates Degree this allowed me to be qualified to take the Ohio Architectural License exam

before completing my Bachelor Degree. I passed the exam in 1983 which was prior to the requirement of a

Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural for qualification which went into law in 1984.

Professional Experience

Ray Basham, Architect, Gahanna, Ohio 1994 – Currently Sole Proprietor

Role: A one man office offering full architectural services. I am reasonable for everything from client contact to

schematic design, preparation of working documents, writing of specifications, permitting and construction

administration working on light commercial projects, fire restoration projects, residential and restaurants. Some of

my clients include Papa John’s Pizza, White Castle Restaurants, Five Points Apartments and Belford Construction

Company.

Selected Accomplishments:

Architect and Project Manager that developed a passive solar energy school gymnasium in the Columbus

area, utilizing ground berming, natural light and the slope of the site to create an efficient energy saving

building.

Integrated a multi-million dollar single family residence into a slope site to provide a scenic view of the

protected nature preserve adjacent to home lot, working with the contractor and consultants and was able to

meet all the clients’ design wishes both outdoor and indoor while keeping within the time table and budget .

Construction Manager for an 11 story university hospital expansion which provided much needed bed space

and a state of the art intensive care unit while achieving the budget and future expansion objectives.

PCI Design Group, Inc., Westerville, Ohio 2005 – 2012 Senior Architect

Role: Role: As the Senior Architect, I designed and prepared working sets of drawings and specifications for

multimillion dollar government funded low income housing projects including: new, renovated, or restoration of

multi-family, multi-story senior and single family residences. These projects had very limited government budgets,

restrictive scopes and challenging sites. My duties also included management of the studio staff, permitting projects,

code review and response, financial and housing author review response, construction administration which

included project site visits to review project schedule, monthly draw paper work, project compliance with owner

standards, workmanship and preparation of filed inspection reports.

Selected Accomplishments:

Renovated and changed a 1929 historical school building in Michigan to a 40 unit elderly housing project

keeping the building historically intact and providing the community with its existing focal point while

supplying the seniors in this area with quality housing and memories of the educational past. This project

received the 2011 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.

Professional Architect and Project Manager for a three story 60 unit senior living in Indiana using modular

framing system and energy saving equipment. This project was certified LEED Gold providing tenants a

clean and healthy environment to live in.

Architect and Project Manager for tax credit project in Portage Indiana. Renovation of 92 apartment units

with many energy saving criteria including: solar panels on the roof to offset a minimum of 25% of

projects electricity used as well as meeting LEED certification. T his project was featured on Facebook. See

Lusk Harkin Architects and Planners, Columbus, Ohio 2003 – 2005 Project Architect

Role: As Project Architect, I developed commercial retail projects for clients like Continental Real Estate and

Glimcher Group. I managed each project from setting up the time table, hiring consultants, producing construction

documents, writing specifications, permitting, bidding process and construction management. I also oversaw the

progress of tenant contractors and all tenant improvements. I managed multiple projects from start to the final

opening and client -tenant satisfaction.

Selected Accomplishments:

Managed, prepared and administrated a $2 million rehabilitation of existing outdated shopping plaza which

the owners could not keep tenants. Upon completion of this project, the owner’s revenue increased and

occupancy increased by 75%

Designed and developed new retail projects by analyzing construction techniques, materials and equipment

with contractors, vendors and tenants allowing a lowered capital investment by 20% and improved

construction time by 10 %

Architectural Resource Group, Inc., Worthington, Ohio 1997 – 2002 Principle-Partner

Role: Principal with fellow architects William Pepperney and Dan Marsh. We did not specialize in one type of

project. We developed commercial, restaurants and retail, medical, educational, civic and governmental. I was the

partner in charge of management of the drafting studio and responsible for the setup and maintenance of the

computer network. I collaborated with my partners on project design, budgeting, time scheduling, and production

of documents and company administration. Some of our clients included The Ohio State University, Columbus

School Board, The City of Columbus, The City of Chillicothe, White Castle Restaurants, Wendy’s Restaurants, Tim

Hortons Restaurants, individual dentist and doctor offices.

Selected Accomplishments:

Designed and administrated the construction of a chain of mall in-line restaurants working with mall

management, corporate management and the contractors to achieve an improvement of 10% in construction

time.

Renovated and remodeled 200 Rax Restaurants into Tim Hortons restaurants achieved all corporate

objectives and time schedules.

Architect for a renovation and expansion to a veterinary hospital to provide enlarged examination rooms

and expand kennel care areas on the first floor. The second floor became the doctors’ offices and employee

rooms. I was able to optimize the original building design to provide natural sunlight into the new kennel

area and second floor offices also proving passive heating while keeping within the required building foot

print.

Was Architect for a $2 million dollar home in Camden Lakes, Ohio which the owner was completely

happy, referring my firm to several other home owners in the area producing additional profitable projects

for the our firm.

UMA Architecture, Columbus, Ohio 1994 – 1996 Head Staff Architect

Role: As Head Staff Architect, I headed up the production and management of a variety of projects, mostly

commercial, restaurant and residential. I managed each project from setting up the time table, hiring consultants,

producing construction documents, writing specifications, permitting, bidding process and construction

administration. Reported directly to principles of the firm and collaborated on marketing and client presentations.

Selected Accomplishments:

The firm was still hand drafting all documentation until I provided the company with the technical

knowledge and the start up into CAD production and trained all draftsmen in the use of basic CAD drafting.

One of my clients included Huntington Banks where I did several of their electronic bank branches which

was the prelude to internet banking.

Project Manager for the Grayson Medical Building preparing all the construction documents and

specifications, cross coordination with medical equipment suppliers and building mechanical engineers to

provide the proper systems for the client.

Metro Media Steak Houses, Dayton, Ohio 1993 – 1994 Corporate Architect & Designer

Role: The corporate architect in charge of redesigning and remodeling all the Ponderosa Steak House and Steak &

Ale Restaurants in the current chain. I managed a staff of three to produce multiple project sets of working

drawings for permitting and construction use.

Selected Accomplishments:

Self taught and became proficient in the use of UNIX operating system and ARRIS C AD software for the

production of construction documents.

Remodeled 60 +/- company owned stores and another 50 franchised units throughout Ohio and Indiana.

Developed new exterior looks and better layout for the interiors to make the customer’s experience more

enjoyable.

Hardees’ Food Systems, Rocky Mount, North Carolina 1990 – 1993 Corporate Architect

Role: I was the leader of a professional team of architects, engineers and contractors for the schematic design and

final production set of documents used for permitting and construction of the remodeling and converting 650

acquired restaurants in the northeast area of the United States. I personally visited each restaurant to develop

existing layout and design the proposed new layout. Upon approval of the proposed layout fr om owners and

operations, I would get my staff of six to produce the documents for construction and over see the production for

accuracy, coordinated the equipment with the equipment supplier and schedule with the construction departments. I

reported directly to the department head and was also in charge of new prototype design development for the

restaurant chain.

Selected Accomplishments:

I designed and developed new restaurant prototypes, by analyzing food preparation and equipment location

working with management, franchisees and equipment suppliers to reduce the kitchen area size and make

production flow well, which improved customer service. By reducing the overall building size, it reduced

building costs and shorted construction time.

Leader of professional team of architects, interior designers, engineers and contractors that achieved all

corporate objectives while remodeling and converting 650 restaurants to provide instant market penetration

and profit in the Northeastern United States.

This was my first introduction to CAD drafting, I taught myself the basic skills with the help of my staff

and became very proficient in a short period of time.

Wolfgang Doreschlag Ltd, Inc., Columbus, Ohio 1980 – 1990 Project Manager, licensed Architect,

Vice President

Role: This firm specialized in the design of both new and remodeled restaurants. The clients included the

companies: Bob Evans, York Steak House, Rax Restaurants, Wendy’s and many more. Restaurant design has many

architectural elements that must be considered from equipment types to proper placement for easy food production,

analyzing the customer relationship of the dining areas to the location of the entries, restrooms, the path for means

of egress, human comfort while dining and many more mechanical, electrical and plumbing decisions. I became

very adept in the design and production of restaurants. I started as a Project Manager working in the production of

construction documents, while working to obtain my Ohio Architecture License. After obtaining my license in

1983, I was one of three architect associates and then was promoted to Vice President and manager in charge of the

all production staff.

Selected Accomplishments:

Architect for the renovation of several existing rest plazas on the Ohio and Indiana Turnpike installing the

first fast food restaurant to provide travelers with quick and easy food. This concept replaced the old

cafeteria style food service. I also collaborated in the development of the food court concept presently in

use at all the turnpike plazas.

Architectural Project Manager and team leader of 4 for the installation York Steak House restaurants in

malls across the United States. My team and I were responsible for bring in millions of dollars of revenue to

the Firm. I would do the site surveys and preliminary restaurant layout then would collaborate with my

team to complete the construction documents.

R.J. Palencar, AIA, Worthington, Ohio 1970 – 1980 Draftsman, Project Manager

Role: I worked as an architectural draftsman alongside Mr. Palencar who became my teacher and mentor. We were

a two man team and developed a close relationship with our clients who included the City of Marysville, Franklin

County Commissioners, the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, Columbus Work House, Scott Seed Company and

many more. I would develop complete projects from schematic design to construction administration . I developed

site plans and construction documents, including all the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural systems. I

cross coordinated with any outside consultants and collaborate directly with Mr. Palencar on all projects.

Selected Accomplishments:

Developed a plan to utilize an unused crawl space at a Columbus school for a locker room addition,

providing convenience to the playing fields, security for the school, and cost efficient expansion.

Designer and Project Manager for a fire station in a small community. I worked with city authorities and

fire chief. I was able to design a building which fulfilled the needs of the fire depa rtment, but also the

community. Working close with the contractor, I was able to get it built for 5% under the construction

budget.
