SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
International Studies
As an investigator I've dealt with people from a wide variety of social,
economic, and cultural backgrounds. In dealing with people from national
backgrounds other than my own (US), I remain well-read and aware of current
international issues, enough to intelligently converse with people from
other cultures on things that matter to them.
Customer Service
Investigation work carried a strong customer service aspect. Investigators
were perceived as carrying a great deal of authority in the field, but at
the same time had to keep people happy. A good example would be the
electronics training units at the Marine base at 29 Palms. Each unit had a
particular way they wanted trainees located and approached. There were
trainees on night shifts who needed to sleep during the day. Instructors
did not want to be surprised by interview appointments that conflicted with
training schedules. I avoided this by coordinating with the command section
for each unit.
Resource Management
I had to constantly be aware of the two main resources- time and money.
Getting the interview right the first time and getting an overall case done
in as few trips to the field as possible allowed me to get cases done as
fast as possible and as efficiently as possible (avoiding extra cost to
USIS by having to drive back out to the field).
Communications
Investigation work involved a constant flow of information downward (where
is the subject?, when can they meet with the investigator?, etc.), sideways
(keeping other investigators working on the same case apprised of any
changes or updates), and upward (keeping in touch with USIS/OPM on any
significant developments- deployments, transfers, etc.). Cases got done
quickly and efficiently when everyone kept in contact with each other. I
made it a priority to keep my cases flowing smoothly and to make life
simple for my team leader.
Performance Measurement
I dealt with individual, team-level, and district-level performance stats
(production, quality, and timeliness). I strove to improve my performance
numbers through a healthy sense of competition with my fellow
investigators. In my most recent performance appraisal (January 2012), I
was rated in the top 3 of a team of approximately 30 investigators.
Intelligence Operations
I performed a vital national security function with an intelligence aspect
that was always present, if only rarely felt at the forefront. Most people
had normal stories and normal lives- a traffic ticket here, a past-due
credit card there. It was a rare occasion- but an important one- someone
who threatened murder, or attempted suicide, or spoke of an overseas
relative who was into anti-American activities. I was trained for most
situations and knew how to correctly escalate the matter when a new type of
situation arose.
