Under the direction of the Director of Student Health, performs administrative and supervisory duties related to the operation of general medicine within the health center. Serves as a physician in the provision of health care services.

Essential Duties

Serves as chief advisor to the director of Student Health regarding matters related to implementation and evaluation of medical services, medical policies, and clinical personnel concerns.

Supports the Director in fulfilling the goals and policies necessary to meet the mission of the Student Health Clinic.

Oversees medical residency rotation programs.

Participates in clinic accreditation activities.

Participates actively in the clinic quality improvement programs.

Resolves problems and issues affecting the department and oversees measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the department.

Supervises physicians and nurse practitioners, including selection, orientation and performance evaluation.

Plans and coordinates work schedules for physicians and practitioners; authorizes leave requests and arranges substitute coverage.

Supervises and coordinates work schedules for physician consultants (pool) working within the health center.

Coordinates delivery of general medical services and specialty clinic services

Directs the planning and implementation of continuing education programs for physicians and nurse practitioners.

Serves as a resource person and active participant in health promotion, preventive health, continuing medical education, and medical practice.

Participates in management activities related to services and systems planning, budgeting, program evaluation, quality assurance and assessment, etc.

Serves as ASU Health Services representative on university committees.

Acts in place of Director as required regarding clinical medical decisions.

Serves as spokesperson for ASU Health Services as requested by the Director.

Serves as a staff physician, providing health care services as described in the physician job description.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Medical Degree earned from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical institution and Eight (8) years experience in the practice of medicine, including five (5) years in health care administration, or in a supervisory capacity; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Licensure to practice medicine, or eligibility for licensure to practice medicine in the state of Arizona. Current or eligibility for Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DEA#). Completion of residency training in an Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education accredited residency training program in one of the following specialties: Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Med/Peds or Pediatrics. Current certification by American Board of Medical Specialists in Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Med/Peds or Pediatrics.

Knowledge in health promotion and preventive health care.

Knowledge of collegiate medicine practice, trends, and models.

Experience in the practice of medicine.

Experience in problem solving and decision-making.

Experience in dealing with medical issues related to young adults.

Experience in effectively managing, supervising and evaluation assigned staff.

Experience in program design and development.

Evidence of effective communication.

Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%);

Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (15%)

Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (10%)

Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts

Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions

Periodic travel involving local, regional, and national destinations requiring operation of a motorized vehicle which may also involve non-standard work hours.;

Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone, and associated computer/technology peripherals.;

This position provides supervision of assigned health care professionals for completion of patient health care related tasks as needed.
