We are actively seeking an experienced Senior Geologist to join our Conventional Heavy team in Calgary, Alberta. Reporting to the Manager, Geosciences – Conventional Heavy, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining continual inventory of executable drilling locations through project lifespan, generating, and identifying drillable locations that meet or exceed Strathcona’s economic and risk criteria, and generating/exploiting economically viable oil prospects in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, specifically within Strathcona’s Conventional Heavy division.

Essential Functions

Undertake, with limited supervision, detailed geological evaluations utilizing all available geological and geophysical data to identify areas with oil potential and develop discovered reserves.

Build and interpret stratigraphic and structural cross-sections to formulate realistic models of the subsurface geology.

Construct subsurface formation isopach, structure, facies and volume maps to illustrate reservoir characteristics.

Evaluate externally generated prospects.

Evaluate both corporate and asset acquisitions.

Work closely with geophysicists and engineers to optimize exploitable reserves of heavy oil.

Provide geological information, technical guidance and support to land, engineering and operations for government reporting and partner requirements.

Assist in reserves review with 3rd Party Engineers.

Integrate SEM, thin section, core, drill cuttings and petrophysical analysis to accurately characterize reservoirs for maximum heavy oil recovery.

Design and execute drilling programs. Steer horizontal wells to achieve maximum production.

Other special duties and responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned or delegated by the company’s Senior Management or Board of Directors.

Compile and monitor competitor activity and findings for ideas on how to improve our assets.

Compile and integrate multiple sources of data and information to continually improve reservoir analysis of project assets.

Qualifications Include:

Minimum 15 years experience.

Bachelor’s degree in Geology or related field.

Must be registered as a Professional Geologist with APEGA.

Clear understanding of the depositional history of the WCSB and how it relates to hydrocarbon accumulation.

Advanced computer literacy with geological software – geoScout, StarSteer, and GeoGraphix.

Collaborative, supportive, trusted team member, working towards the common goal of optimizing growth of production and reserves.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to adapt to changing situations while maintaining a high level of technical support to the team.

Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment:

Calgary office with occasional field travel.
