Job Description

Understand and anticipate potentially life-threatening sequelae of non-cardiac emergencies and instututes appropriate emergency therapy where essential for the preservation of life.

Provides Advanced Life Support including medical evaluation, treatment and stabilization of the critically ill and injured; responds to emergency rescue situations involving potential loss of life or bodily injury; maintains control, manages and directs patient care at the scene of a pre-hospital emergency; provides training and instruction to lesser trained personnel; performs other duties as required.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Provides and directs fast, efficient Advanced Life Support to the ill and injured utilizing all basic and advanced abilities and techniques, including but not limited to the placement of peripheral and intravenous lines, esophageal obturator airways, endotracheal intonations, cricothyreotomys, pericardiocenthsis, thoracentesis, fluid and drug therapy, cardiac monitoring and EKG interpretations, defibrillation and cardio version.

Recognizes and understands a medical emergency and makes reasonable and acceptable differential diagnosis.

Perform critical physical examinations.

Recognize common cardiac dysrhythmias and understands the principles and treatment modalities for left threatening dysrhythmias.

Understand and anticipate potentially life-threatening sequelae of non-cardiac emergencies and institutes appropriate emergency therapy where essential for the preservation of life.

Deal with medical and emotional needs of any victim of acute illness or injury with the goal of reducing mortality and morbidity.

Manage and direct all first responders at the scene of a medical emergency such as Fire Department personnel, Police Department personnel and other EMT's.

Be responsible for quality patient care as established by North Caddo Medical Center policy,

Files and completes standardized reports of patient information and care for the use of receiving hospital and administration, including nature of the request for aid, pertinent past history therapy provided diagnosis, disposition and sufficient patient information for billing purposes.

Maintains effective communication with physician on duty at the hospitals to relate patient condition and obtain orders for treatment if needed.

Follow standard written protocols when a physician cannot be contacted.

Transports the ill and injured to the correct facility for medical care.

Operate emergency vehicles in a safe manner under all conditions.

Clean, disinfect and maintain all equipment.

Perform technical rescues in removing victims from carried terrain and circumstances.

Follow standard operating policies and procedures as developed and interpreted by the EMS Director.

Additional examples of Work Performance:

Clean and maintain (minor maintenance) vehicles and equipment.

Clean and maintain living quarters.

Maintain records of vehicles, supplies, training and daily work.

Performs any other related duties as assigned.

Meet qualifications within the functional job analysis.

Turn in copies of all licenses, certifications and documentation required for job performance as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience, which demonstrates competence in each of the following:

Perform technical medical skills with a high degree of accuracy, understand and effectively deal with emotional and medical needs of victims of injures, acute illnesses or psychological emergencies, maintain a professional and objective approach to the care of ill or injured patients, learn new concepts in rescue and medical skills and techniques in pre-hospital care, perform a variety of limited mechanical work involved in the use, testing and maintenance of rescue and medical equipment, direct the work of and teach other personnel, understand and follow oral and written instructions and orders, maintain a professional attitude when representing North Caddo Medical Center, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, assist other agencies, hospital personnel and the general public, drive and operate emergency ambulance units, and author reports with narrative and correct numeric information.

Other Requirements:

The job performance requires the EMT Paramedic to operate medical vehicles, move medical equipment and extract injured persons from a wide variety of situations. Situations can involve but not limited to vehicular, industrial and residential accidents, injuries or illness and can occur anywhere in North Caddo Parish. At times, the work requires movement over various types of terrain sch as hilly, steep, rocky, rough and/or wet slippery surfaces. The EMT Paramedic at all times must be able to carry or assist to carry someone from site of the injury to the mode of transportation and ride with the injured party to the hospital. In order to perform a physical assessment of the injured party, the Paramedic must be able to see, hear and communicate with the injured patient.

Work shifts are normally set as a 24 hour shift. Some shifts are and can be subjected to be longer. Paramedics must be prepared to stay overnight with enough uniforms and equipment to do so.

Uniforms MUST be kept clean and neat according to Hospital policy. The uniform shirt will be North Caddo EMS T-shirts or North Caddo T-shirts for sponsored events such as Breast Cancer awareness.

Uniform pants will be blue or black EMS pants.

Footwear will be black work boots or black tennis shoes. Any other garment outside of this shall have the approval of the EMS Director PRIOR to wearing.

All units are required to have two pagers and one portable radio. The EMT Basic shall have the portable radio on at all times, If ay any time a unit notices that equipment is missing, he/she needs to report it immediately to the Supervisor.

Additional job duties or functions may be requested per administration to assist in other areas of the hospital within your capabilities.
