Wartsila is looking for an Engineering Manager with experience in lithium-ion battery systems and power systems up to 1500V. This position is within the Engineering Hardware Product Development Team which is responsible for the development of Wartsila’s integrated battery energy storage systems products.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

The location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä’s facility in Herndon, Virginia.

Responsibilities:

· Provide overall leadership and administrative management for personnel which includes defining roles and responsibilities, conducting performance appraisals, participating in salary planning, promoting professional growth through timely performance feedback, coaching, and counseling, among other leadership responsibilities

· Build and a grow a team of test engineers, technicians and electrical engineers.

· Define, plan and oversee system, subsystem and components testing at Wartsila test facility and/or third party lab.

· Setup test plan, define equipment and prototypes needed.

· Provide leadership with high integrity and oversight of processes protecting intellectual property, export controlled and strategic technology

· Provide oversight and guidance on testing the product to UL9540,UL 1973, short circuit test, large fire test and UL 9540a

· Provide support and technical system expertise to the rest of the development organization on topics related to our HW solutions and related sub-systems and components

· Define design issues and risks to the product team and support driving solution

· Collaborate with the larger team to optimize requirement and needs

· Support individuals in their career development plan

· Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions

· Represent Wartsila at the standards organization working on product safety for lithium-ion battery systems.

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree is required, graduate degree preferred

· 5+ years of product development, testing or systems engineering experience preferably in the energy storage industry

· Strong understanding of system design and installations of lithium-ion batteries

· Able to review, understand and present test reports and finding to the larger team.

· Ability to provide guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge / skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem

· Excellent written and verbal English and interpersonal skills

· Ability to work with global team from different backgrounds and on different time zones

· Maintain positive working relationships with peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment

· A dedication and commitment to results in a dynamic and fast developing environment

· Strong understanding of good documentation practices

· Knowledge of energy storage certifications and compliances

· Familiarity with NEMA and IP enclosure design and testing

· Flexible and willing to adapt and learn

· Strong technical communication skills

· Team player attitude

· Willing to travel 20% of the time, this include international travel
