MECHANIC

Full Time

Starting Wage: $27.03 per hour

After completing the 120 day training period:$28.62 per hour

SUMMARY

GRTC Transit System seeks skilled candidates, who have excellent mechanical aptitude and a strong work ethic. Diesel experience is preferred. Candidates must have a good driving record with a positive point balance and be able to pass a background check, pre-employment drug test and DOT physical. A Virginia CDL Class B License Learner’s permit with a Passenger (P) Endorsement must be obtained prior to starting employment.

WORK SCHEDULE

Work schedule will vary, to include nights and weekends. This position is eligible for overtime.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs inspections of diesel and gas equipped vehicles as well as repairs fuel and cooling systems, air, fluid, oil, water lines and hoses.

Performs brake relines and assists with engine, transmission and chassis work.

Replaces vehicle components such as starters, alternators, air compressors, blowers, turbo-chargers, radiators and performs 6K mile preventative service maintenance.

Responds to service calls. Also responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work area.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma is preferred; Certification from a vocational school or completion of an apprenticeship is a plus.

Bus and or large truck repair experience preferred.

Excellent mechanical aptitude required.

Must be able to obtain a CDL Learner’s Class B with P endorsement permit before employment. Preference will be given to applicants who currently hold a Valid Virginia CDL Class B License with P endorsement.

Position involves a combination of indoor and outdoor working conditions and exposure to safe levels of diesel and cleaning solvent fumes and lubricating oils and grease.

Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.

Requires frequent bending and kneeling, with occasional climbing.

Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle.
