Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design of various mechanical systems as required for all projects that are assigned to him/her by the Director of Engineering. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible to manage all design aspects of the project from conception to completion with minimal assistance from senior staff members. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible to manage the drafting process to produce design and bid documents in compliance with company standards, of the Client’s standards.

This position will require some travelling and essentially will be required to be on the construction site, in some cases at least once a week. The Mechanical Engineer is expected to conduct multiple projects simultaneously and conduct project meetings with owners and contractors.

Key Responsibility Areas:

Develop, monitor and control project scope, project schedule, budget and resources within the guidelines as established by the Client, in order to meet or exceed the Client’s expectations.

Obtain, diagnose and respond to specific customer needs that will enhance the quality of the CEC customer service and satisfaction for a mutually beneficial relationship.

Initiate, complete and deliver all related project documentation in order to maintain and achieve the established project goals.

Promote services to existing customer base while conducting services for them.

Identify and initiate key design issues and solutions in the beginning of projects.

Continue to strive for technical expertise through supplemental certifications and continuing education seminars or classes.

Key Competency Areas

Technical Skills:

Understands and is proficient in the Consulting Engineering business, including the creation of studies and reports, conceptual design activities, development of design and bid documents, development of project specifications, project management associated with both design activities and construction activities, and the development of commissioning documentation.

Conversant and experienced with multi-trade design and construction coordination – architectural, structural, electrical, civil, and noise/vibration.

Understands and is capable of fulfilling design activities for the following:

Heat gain and heat loss load analysis

Water system applications (hot, chilled, glycol, condenser)

Steam system applications

Refrigerant system applications

Air system applications (supply, return, exhaust, ventilation)

Automatic temperature control systems

Building automation systems

Fire protections systems

Sanitary DWV piping systems and storm piping systems

Domestic hot and cold water piping systems

Fuel oil piping systems

Equipment selection and analysis

Understands and can interpret Building Codes – NEC, IBC, IMC, IFC, IPC, IEC, OBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, ASPE, etc.

Proficient in creating / writing Project Specification, Method of Procedures, Commissioning Scripts and Construction Observation Reports.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, AutoCAD, MS Project and PowerPoint.

Understands and is capable of preparing construction estimates, identifying value-engineering opportunities and supporting the bid process

Problem Solving Expertise:

The rational approach to the processes involved in identifying and defining the project goals and problems, selecting and implementing alternative solutions strategies, the management of resources and contingencies and reducing performance deviations.Influencing Capabilities:

Demonstrated leadership in the attitudes and behaviors in the effective assessment management and adaptability required in handling situations (including decision making, behavior, conflict management, negotiations scenario’s etc.)

Planning:

Competency in strategic and operational planning methods and procedures, the monitoring and measurement of targeted results, resource allocation and management practices.

Managerial:

The basic set of managerial task management attributes involving directing, implementing, motivating and evaluation of general work environment (in the office, in meetings w/ clients, and at the construction site) for the purpose of accomplishing specific, targeted objectives.

Communications:

Written and oral communications skills required to effectively conduct daily management of project personnel, including CEC staff, Clients, Vendors, Contractors and Building Code Officials.
