Job Description

Montgomery College is currently accepting applications for possible openings as a part-time Counseling faculty member on the Germantown, Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring campuses. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and demonstrates the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. This position is currently eligible for telework one day a week. This eligibility is subject to change based on the needs of the unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Providing academic advising and counseling through on campus, in-person and virtual (e.g., live chat, email, web conference) individual and group meetings to diverse student populations including but not limited to first-year, international, English as a second language, students with disabilities, first-generation, active duty/veteran, adult learners, student athletes, dual enrollment, undecided and transfer students.

Assisting students with academic, career and social development in pursuit of their personal, educational, transfer and professional goals.

Providing crisis intervention and follow up as necessary, including support and referrals to campus and community resources.

Teaching Student Success (STSU) courses including course preparation, grading and evaluation. Incorporating the use of an educational enterprise platforms (Blackboard) and other relevant technology into instruction, including inexpensive or no-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.

Preparing and delivering workshops and other outreach, as needed.

Developing, implementing and assessing success strategies and educational plans for students experiencing academic difficulty and other targeted cohorts of students.

Teach Student Success (STSU) Courses, as needed.

Ability and willingness to work on campus during daytime hours Monday- Friday, as well as evenings and an occasional Saturday.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in counseling or a related field (i.e., psychology, social work, human services, student affairs, higher education).

Two years of counseling and advising experience (may include: academic, career, social, and personal issues).

Computer literacy including Microsoft 365 Suite, and a student information system (i.e. Banner, Starfish).

Experience working with diverse student populations such as first-year, international, English as a second language, students with disabilities, first-generation, active duty/veteran, adult learners, student athletes, dual enrollment, undecided, career and transfer students.

Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to the Colleges strategic plan of inclusion.

Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus)*. Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools. *If you do not have access to a personal computer, please notify the department chair at the time of interview. Subject to available funds, the college may be able to provide temporary access to resources.

Must be eligible to work in the United States without a sponsor.

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful counseling, advising, and teaching experience in a comprehensive community college setting.

Experience teaching college success courses.

Experience with student information systems (e.g., Banner), advising platforms (e.g., Starfish, Degree Works), communication platforms (e.g., Zoom, Live Chat) and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard).

Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently in one of the most common second languages spoken in Montgomery County (Spanish, Amharic, Chinese, Vietnamese or French).
