Overview

This role will shape the future of experimental biology at ATCC, a pioneer in biomaterials manufacturing, while establishing a new site focused on the generation and analysis of large-scale phenotypic data using high-throughput (HTP) automation methods. As part of the creation of a new site focused on accelerating Predictive Biology applications, ATCC is seeking a Senior Director, Predictive Biology, Engineering for an onsite role. The location of this role will be based in a US bio hub, to be determined with this leader and ATCC executive team.

The Senior Director, Predictive Biology, Engineering will serve as the hands-on technical leader for the software and hardware teams. With the support of ATCC BioNexus Principals in Cell Biology Content and BioInformatics, design and manage platforms that support HTP biological assays to generate data to be used in developing predictive models and continued optimization.

Responsibilities

Create a strategy and technical roadmap to develop, test, and deploy new workflows into the pipeline.

Hire, manage and grow the hardware integration and software engineering teams to lead platform development and management, including setting goals for the team, prioritizing projects, and overseeing the team budget.

Determine the foundational architecture of instruments and provide technical leadership on all aspects of the physical workflow.

Support external collaborations with academic and commercial partners to onboard novel technologies in automated workflows.

Architect the software components of the developed platforms, spanning data ingestion, data storage, and data analysis for process improvements and troubleshooting.

Design intuitive interfaces for visualizing and annotating high-content data, allowing for insights to be derived by the data scientists and process engineers on their team.

Build a data portal(s) inspired by the Human Protein Atlas and the Allen Brain Map for internal and external groups.

Ensure robust documentation of work instructions associated with automated workflows, which enables transfer to operations and/or new employees with ease, and maintains an acceptable level of quality assurance associated with ATCC standards.

Own the IP roadmap for the engineering team, with support from other relevant groups when needed.

Work closely with supply chain and manufacturing teams to ensure new products are scalable in production.

Manage and support technology transfer and improvements in operations, deploying team members as needed to own platform build, training, workflow operations, documentation, troubleshooting and other requirements.

Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with the ability to navigate early stage organizational structures, building credibility and relationships across functions and levels.

Be a partner to incorporate into the larger ATCC team, supporting the culture, and building alignment with company values.

Represent the company within the engineering community, enhancing company visibility and expertise.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

MSc or an equivalent engineering degree in a technical field.

A minimum of 15 years in the life sciences industry, with 7+ years in management roles.

Experience in the building and development of complex life science instrumentation, automation, and software tools.

Having a track record in building partnerships or collaborations with data scientists/ computational biologists, engineers and experimental biologists.

Has led and scaled a high-performance team, including goal setting, and contributing to a culture of high-quality methods/process development.

Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain top talent while providing mentorship and career advancing opportunities to reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to architect complex systems using a modular and expandable system architecture.

Familiarity with cloud technologies and the deployment of applications to major cloud providers.

Familiarity with AI and machine learning techniques and their applications to life science data.

Works effectively under pressure to meet deadlines, and deliver on multiple projects and functional priorities simultaneously.

Ability to align diverse stakeholders towards common company-wide goals.

Ability to effectively communicate and influence internal and external audiences, using both oral and written communication skills.
