Editorial Projects in Education, Inc. (EPE), the publisher of Education Week and a nonprofit media organization that provides the most trusted news on K-12 American education, is seeking a Controller to join our Finance and Accounting team.

Job Summary

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller oversees the core accounting functions at Education Week and ensures the timely and accurate reporting of EPE’s finances as well as organization-wide compliance with relevant policies and regulations. While managing a team of accounting professionals responsible for the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and financial close activities for the organization, the Controller will work closely with department managers to ensure financial data integrity and support strategic decision-making.

This role will also be responsible for thinking strategically about the use of new technologies and to recommend and implement new systems and processes to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting department.

Responsibilities

Oversee and continuously improve key components of fiscal operations, including month- and year-end close, towards simplification, standardization, and automation.

Manage the day-to-day accounting activity, including the timely and accurate preparation of account reconciliations in support of sound monthly financial statements.

Ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards, particularly revenue recognition, as well organizational policies.

Lead the organization through the annual audit and submission of the Form 990 and 990-T.

Oversee and strengthen the organization’s internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy of financial records. Direct and manage the documentation of accounting policies and procedures.

Support the CFO in the organization’s annual budgeting process and in generating forecasts in collaboration with internal stakeholders.

Provide guidance and mentoring to team members while fostering a collaborative and positive work environment that encourages growth and innovation.

Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA strongly preferred.

8-10 years of accounting experience with increased financial responsibilities assigned over time, and at least 2 years in a managerial position is required.

Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulations (GAAP) required.

Experience in Non-Profit, Media, and/or Subscription/Membership organizations a plus.

Mastery of financial and accounting software and reporting systems; expert in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with Salesforce and/or Certinia/FinancialForce a plus.

This is a hybrid position; the ability to work from the Betheda office on a weekly basis is required.

High level of initiative, attention to detail, sound judgement, and problem-solving skills.

Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment; successfully prioritize and meet deadlines.
