The Ohio Department of Health supports a hybrid teleworking model. This position may work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the manager or supervisor, which will require occasional attendance in the office for training, meetings and other operational needs. Employees must reside within a reasonable distance to their assigned headquarters for compliance with workplace reporting requirements.

What You'll Do:

ODH's Bureau of Infectious Diseases needs part-time college interns to join FoodCORE!

Ohio is one of ten U.S. states to participate in FoodCORE - or, Foodborne Diseases Centers for Outbreak Response Enhancement. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) piloted a project in 2009 to improve state and local responses to foodborne disease outbreaks. Since Ohio joined the project in 2010, our ODH team has helped Ohio's 111 local health departments improve their outbreak response capacity - with FoodCORE interns playing a visible role in that success! Assist with case interviews of patients with certain reportable diseases (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, Campylobacter and Shigella)

help explain importance of gathering personal health data to determine cause of illness

Collect data (e.g., health data from confidential medical records) for Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS)

Monitor reporting of lab results

Prepare data for analysis

Assist epidemiologists with descriptive statistical analysis and reporting/summaries, using various software apps (e.g., Microsoft Access, EpiInfo) change to Microsoft Excel, REDCap

Distribute data to other ODH program teams and government agencies

Prepare infographics for reports/displays

Prepare and/or make presentations to health professionals (e.g., local health depts) and public

Represent FoodCORE project at meetings, trainings, or conferences

Schedule Expectations: First shift (between 8 AM & 5 PM, Mon-Fri), with flexibility. Typically, expect to work 10-29 hours per week, depending on available workload. Hours may flex to accommodate academic schedules and/or FoodCORE program requirements.

Position Qualifications:

Must be currently enrolled in college pursuing a graduate degree in public health, public administration, health education, health promotion, psychology, social work, nursing or other health or social service discipline.
