ABOUT THE ROLE:

Holcim US, a leading supplier of quality, construction building materials in the United States, has immediate openings for a Rail Brakeman to support the Aggregate Production Operations in Millville, WV. The position is primarily responsible for or spotting and switching railcars throughout the railway yard, coupling and uncoupling rail cars and maintaining track areas and loading/unloading conveyors. Responsible for safely carrying out all movements to protect crew and public (sales trucks, public road crossings, and company visitors). Workig hours are between 10:00pm-7:30am

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

Responsible for handling railcar and movements throughout the rails yard.

Determining the correct train moves to access the proper tracks and access different areas of the rail yard.

Performing general railcar duties including spotting, coupling railcars, prep for railcar for loading and unloading and pick-up. Responsible for securing the rail car pockets for loading.

Demonstrating understanding of the railcar air brake systems in detail along with train dynamics such as slack control and train handling techniques required to move trains safely and efficiently throughout the rail yard.

Informing mgmt and or Safety Department of performance problems with railway switches or other railcar and railway hardware.

Wearing protective equipment such as welding shields, hard hat, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, work boots, safety vest, face shield, and safety glasses.

Working hours may vary in length and schedule. Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek and various shift works.

Operating communication radio and hand signals for the movement of trains and also emergency signals to advise that movements need to be stopped.

Performing inspection and maintenance of locomotives and trucks in accordance with federal, state and company regulations.

Cleaning and repairing the belt loading system and repairs, maintaining and cleaning tracks as needed.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Required Work Experience: 6 months to a year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

Excellent oral communication skills with close attention to detail

Successful completion of the Brakeman’s Training Course

Working knowledge of federal and state regulations related to inspection and maintenance.

Must have an understanding of the train air brake systems in detail along with train dynamics such as slack control and train handling techniques required to move trains safely and efficiently throughout the rail yard.

Must be proficient in the use of radio and hand signals for the movement of trains and also emergency signals to advise that movements need to be stopped.

Basic computer skills with working knowledge of PC applications (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Internet, etc.)

Ability to work independently and in a team environment

High attention to detail

Must be able to lift 50 pounds

Strong safety orientation

Ability to work Monday through Friday, and occasional Saturdays

Subject to applicable law, employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
