Job Title: Paraprofessional- Resource Assistant

Location: Dunn's Corners Elementary

Class Title: Regular- Non Exempt- Local 808

Effective Date: 05/02/2024

Salary Range: Contractual Range

Hours per week: Full Time

Job Summary: This paraprofessional position is responsible, under the direction of the teacher, for: instruction, accommodations, and implementation of behavior plans, for students with moderate impairments in learning, social/ emotional development, and behavior. The paraprofessional is responsible for developing an effective personal relationship with children having special needs, which requires patience, empathy and flexibility on the part of the aide. The position requires assisting a teacher in various instructional duties and performing clerical duties according to established procedures which can be learned on the job and including following a medical plan for students under the guidance of the school nurse.

Responsibilities:

Work with children who have special needs in a sensitive and effective manner.

Learn assigned duties readily and to adhere to prescribed classroom procedures.

Respond simultaneously to a variety of needs for students and staff while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity to individual needs.

Assists the teacher in providing instruction to individuals with behavioral challenges.

Supervises students in a designated de-escalation area with other adults in safe proximity.

Supports students when rejoining a group following de-escalation time.

Under the direction of appropriate professionals, follows through with IEP goals and supplementary services such as, but not limited to, OT, PT, and Speech/Language.

As instructed by the teacher, records and reports data on student behavior and performance.

May operate and assist students with the operation of augmentative systems.

Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications:

Experience:

Prefer three to six months of experience in a school environment providing support to students.

Familiar with following through with a medical care plan under the supervision of a school-nurse teacher.

Proficiency in essential computer applications as required, including data collection techniques.

Ability to learn and assist student(s) with the use of a variety of augmentative/communication devices and activities.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Prefer Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree in a related field.

Certification & Licensing:

Must meet the current RI Department of Education requirements and or certifications.

Must maintain CPR, First Aid, and CPI Certification.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Must provide a current national background check without disqualifying results at time of hire.
