Lock Tender

Under immediate supervision, the employee directs boat traffic through a County canal by the operation of mechanical locks and water level control valves.

The work involves performance of a variety of routine duties in the maintenance of the lock and tide gate facility and its grounds.

Duties are subject to shift variation.

Work is reviewed by frequent inspection and by review of the records which the employee keeps.

Does related work as required.

* Some knowledge of construction and operation of power-driven canal locks * some knowledge of the rules and regulations controlling the use of a County canal * some knowledge of the construction and operation of power driven locks * skill in the use of simple mechanical tools to maintain and adjust motors and other canal lock machinery * ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction * ability to keep simple records and to make reports * ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies * physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
