Associates spend one day each week engaging in experiential learning with Stand Together Fellowships and work at one of our many partner organizations the rest of the week.

Our curriculum is designed to supercharge your development and equip you for long-term success as you seek to have an impact on the problems that prevent people from realizing their potential.

Policy Coordinator The Policy Team at the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) seeks a Policy Coordinator.

Join an organization that is unique in the DC network and across the nation.

Founded on the principles of limited government, free markets, and federalism, ALEC is the nation’s largest nonpartisan, individual membership association of state legislators.

Through various educational offerings like regional academies, webinars, and biannual conferences, ALEC provides a forum for members of the public and private sectors to address the tough issues and challenges facing Americans across the country.

Put simply, ALEC is the nexus between the public and private sector pursuit of good policy ideas.

In addition to assistant with department projects and objectives, the policy coordinator will support ALEC Task Forces, including the Communications and Technology Task Force, the Energy, Environment and Agriculture Task Force, and others.

The ALEC Task Forces are responsible for developing and advancing model public policies, as well as producing original research, utilized by state leaders throughout the nation.

The CAT Task Force, for example, includes state legislative leaders and policy experts who believe that America’s proven light-touch regulatory approach on technology and innovation has solidified our nation as the global leader in these critical sectors and supports pragmatic, free-market policy solutions that will grow the digital economy, remove barriers to innovation, and ensure vibrant consumer choice and competition in the online ecosystem.

If you are interested in contributing to cutting-edge state policy debates on topics like the future of artificial intelligence, protecting online speech, promoting energy affordability and independence, then this role is for you.

As the Policy Coordinator, you will be interacting with state legislators and legislative staff from across the country, speaking with government affairs leaders and business owners, and learning from top subject matter experts in technology and telecommunications policy.

You will assist the Executive Vice President of Policy, Vice President of Policy, and Task Force Directors throughout the year to host working groups comprised of legislative and committee staff, coordinate and eventually lead webinars and educational programming for Task Force Members, and aid in policy research, outreach, and Task Force communications.

Typical responsibilities for the role include:

Detailed legislation tracking

Drafting timely blog posts and op-eds

Coordinating task force logistics, administrative responsibilities, and special projects as needed

Assisting with planning and running in-person academies and issue briefings

Policy research and summation

Attending local coalition meetings and policy events

To succeed in the role, you must be detail-oriented, customer-service oriented, a self-starter, and work well under pressure. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a can-do attitude are also keys to success. Finally, you must demonstrate a strong commitment to ALEC’s mission of promoting the Jeffersonian principles of limited government, free markets and federalism.

Role Requirements:

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree

Experience: 1-3 years

Attendance: this is an in-person role; no majority hybrid or remote options are currently available
