The Mining Professional Engineer provides mining engineering services, analyses, calculations and functions for the State of Montana. Responsibilities include providing engineering review to assess the design and implementation of structures, devices, systems and processes for mining compliance in areas that have been or will be disturbed by mining. Assessing and responding to permit applications, amendments and revisions. Performing engineering analysis to determine whether facilities, equipment and industrial processes are constructed and operated in compliance with rules and permit requirements. Calculating reclamation bonds, verifying the amount of bond required for complete reclamation of mining operations, and reviewing requests for bond release. Reviewing and implementing state and federal statutes, rules, and policies. Acting as an engineering liaison for the Department to the public and industry on matters associated with engineering designs, processes, products and policies. Administer the blasting program, ensure compliance, and manage complaints.

For positions that are under $78,000 per year: “This position may be eligible for a statutory base salary annual increase of $3,120 effective July 1, 2024.”

For positions over $78,000 per year: “This position may be eligible for a statutory base salary annual increase of 4% effective July 1, 2024.”

The position includes a career ladder for professional development and pay progression. Minimum Qualifications:

• Licensed professional engineer as required by 37-67-301, MCA, and the Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

• Education and experience requirements as described by 37-67-323, MCA.

• Preferred Experience in environmental engineering design and compliance.

• Current valid Driver's License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy

Candidate must be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Montana within 5 years of hire.

Agency will support a top candidate in obtaining professional engineer licensure, preferably within 5 years.

Pay Scale:

Engineer without an Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer Licensure: 90% of Level 1 Professional Engineer salary

Engineer in Training: 95% of Level 1 Professional Engineer salary

Professional Engineer: Please refer to posted pay range

Other combinations of education and experience may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
