Summary

In a safe, efficient and professional manner the Heavy Equipment Mechanic will support the Maintenance Manager and Leadman with preventative, corrective, and general maintenance for the location. Other duties include, but not limited to, daily assessments of systems, maintain a clean working environment, and other various duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Leadman, while adhering to all safety and health standards. The Mechanic will be responsible for performing repair, and maintenance of equipment and controls located throughout the facility. Installation, repair, Maintenance of associated equipment and components located in the interior facility. Installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical/electrical operating equipment and machinery. Conducting routine and on-going assessments of facility operations. Performing tests, rounds and analysis of data to assure the proper functioning of facility equipment. Monitoring operation of the mechanical, electrical and other operating equipment. Responsible for performing work according to manufacturing standards and following the change process of qualified core equipment and components.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to the following:

Ensure maintenance is executed according to established standards. Identify deficiencies through regular and thorough inspection of facility equipment and systems.

Work closely with the Maintenance Manager and Leadman to optimize the Preventative Maintenance Program.

Administer preventive maintenance program to include machine history, maintenance, and lubrication logs. Follow through on maintenance needs and deficiencies as appropriate.

Ability to operate software such as Equipment Management System and Asset Material System.

Maintain Asset Material System (AMS) to include operating systems logging temperatures, pressures and facility equipment inspections; maintaining operation/maintenance manuals, recording all tests, scans and inspections as directed.

Maintain all tests, logs and manuals in an efficiently organized manner.

Ensure accurate and timely documentation.

Diagnosing complex, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues for all equipment.

Perform MIG, TIG and Arc welding.

Coordinate and manage all 3rd party specialty repair services as required.

Execute required Purchase Order systems.

Mitigate costs of parts and repairs by competitive sourcing.

Working knowledge of the mechanical functions associated with Forklifts, earth moving equipment, portable conveyor systems, and bulk processing equipment. Ability to troubleshoot vehicle electrical, engine and transmission, and possess general servicing skills.

Analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of any problems/malfunctions, and take corrective action as required.

Perform preventative maintenance on all facility equipment, which includes but not limited to assembling all tools, supplies, and instruments necessary to complete the job, performing work with a minimum amount of disruption, conduct immediate clean-up of work area, complete the preventative task sheet, return tools to workshop and unused supplies to storeroom and advise the Leadman of any equipment problems.

Monitor operation, adjust and maintain facility equipment and systems, record readings as necessary to ensure proper operation of equipment and systems, and notify appropriate parties of any problems or malfunctions.

Maintain all ancillary support equipment, portable air compressor, railcar door opener, light trees, generators, pumps, etc.

Assist other mechanics and operators with major repairs and maintenance of facility equipment.

Responsible for supervising ILA Union Longshoremen and adhere to safety standards for operating and responsibility of equipment (documentation, PIT cards, etc.).

Willing to travel to outlying ports to support operations and mechanical needs.

Operate support equipment including forklift, cranes, pay loaders, and moving vehicles.

Maintain tools and order supplies as required for installation and repairs.

Comply with departmental policy for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.

Follow safety practices, and utilize protective clothing and equipment as required by OSHA. Know the whereabouts of all emergency equipment (i.e. fire extinguishers, eyewash, and shower stations, first aid supplies, breathing apparatus, etc.).

Safely use hand tools, power tools and test instruments to maintain, troubleshoot and repair various types of equipment.

Perform other various duties as assigned by supervisors.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent.

Two (2) years of applicable trade school or college and certificate/degree desired.

Must be 18 years of age.

Five years previous experience with industrial maintenance.

Experience working in marine terminal operations environment preferred.

Experience with conveyor systems, Forklift, and pay loader operation and maintenance.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to speak, read, and write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS/COMPUTER SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

REASONING ABILITY

Familiar with and easily able to read and interpret diagrams, drawings, and manuals of craft trades. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid State Driver’s License including clean DMV record.

Ability to obtain a TWIC card.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work in adverse weather and environments such as heat, cold, rain (and other weather conditions). Ability to navigate vessel gangways and ascend/descend hold ladders. Ability to work on equipment that is heavily soiled in bulk materials, such as but not limited to fertilizers, cement, grains, and other various animal feed products.

While performing the duties of this job, the Mechanic is regularly required to stand for extended intervals with occasional breaks, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The individual frequently is required to climb stairs and ladders. The individual must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, at higher than chest level.
