Job Summary:

This position requires familiarity with the terminology of the office unit. The General Clerk selects appropriate methods from a wide variety of procedures or makes simple adaptations and interpretations of a limited number of substantive guides and manuals. The clerical steps often vary in type or sequence, depending on the task. Recognized problems are referred to the supervisor.

Primary Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.

Transfer mail tubs from loading docks to mail room in the morning and mailroom to dock in the afternoon (if needed).

Sort mail tubs to appropriate mail sorting schemes or mail stops.

Bundle mail as required by banding, bagging, or otherwise containerizing.

Research mail not properly addressed or properly coded.

Deliver interoffice mail and picks up mail from mail stops.

Additional Responsibilities

Perform x-ray scan using an x-ray machine to scan all mail and packages for security of customers if required by contract. If required at site, pull bags to be sent at the end of the day.

Responsible for performing job in safe manner, with concern for others and a desire to increase production; If needed, process machinable mail (folding, inserting, sealing, and opening).

Follow HAZMAT procedures for handling potentially hazardous mail.

Process accountable mail utilizing accountable mail tracking system.

Process unidentifiable accountable mail.

May require opening and reading mail and forward to appropriate location.

May require processing requests for publications.

Provide coverage at offsite locations as needed.

Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)

High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required.

Preferred one-year experience in related field.

Preferred experience working in a mail center.

Must have experience in UPS and Federal Express shipping and procedures.

Must have knowledge of U.S Postal regulations in the process of dealing with incoming, outgoing, certified, registered, insured and express mail. Experience in operating various mailroom machines required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to perform routine tasks on special class mail as well as routine and repetitive tasks for long periods with minimum supervision.

Must be able to stand, reach, and walk for long periods of time.

Ability to make minor decisions regarding mail issues/questions.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Good reading and writing skills.

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply, and divide with 10's and 100's.

Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Basic ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office software and accountable mail tracking system. Basic typing skills.

Supervision Received

The incumbent performs a variety of routine work within established policies and procedures and receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
