Lab Research Analyst Senior

Occupational Summary:

Assists in the administration and coordination of the technical activities of a scientific research laboratory. Assist the Scientific/Research Laboratory Manager in managing research projects, developing and administering budgets, schedules, and performance metrics. Serve as an advisor to Research Associates, Lab Analysts, and Lab Technicians insuring standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied.

Work Performed:

Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Confer with principal investigator and Lab Manager in developing plans for research projects and to discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication. Contribute to publications and presentations.

Evaluate and interpret data HIV Viral Load data and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions for VQA HIV-RNA program.

Manage the HIV/SIV Virus Culture testing lab as directed by Lab Director and lab manager. Responsible for maintaining instrument related records, perform QA/QC write up related SOPs, training, perform direct assessments, implement and maintain GCLP,, summary of test results, etc.

Collaborate with lab managers to develop and implement laboratory policies and procedures. Manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures; coordinate with research staff on issues which impact laboratory functions.

Maintain liaison with investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Advise on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards.

Collect information and data through observation, experimentation and various other methods to include operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment. Prepare tissue and specimens for complex procedures, and devise experimental techniques for tests and analyses.

Collaborate with lab managers on issues which impact laboratory services i.e. lab assay billing, budgets, staffing, safety, lab supply and reagent ordering, test workflow etc.

Work with various DHVI and Non DHVI Investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Advise on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards.

Establish the production schedule and management of thee VQA Quality Control Material (QCMs) including quality control testing, shipping and validation for IVQAC

Review and evaluate the day-to-day progress of QCMs in EQAPOL by reviewing and analyzing laboratory documents, including lab equipment daily verification, assay and equipment QC and technical reports.

Provide assistance to all EQAPOL Laboratories with QCM shipments and any procedural inquiries

Assist in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratory. Project future needs and formulate strategies consistent with projections.

Manage and coordinate the activities of a project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and laboratory resources required; coordinate and supervise the performance of routine and specialized technical procedures in the laboratory.

Prepare technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Assist with writing and preparing papers for publications.

Plan and conduct meetings with laboratory personnel to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes and standards.

Represent the laboratory in interactions with other departments and NIH networks through conference calls, webinars and meetings.

Assist and take part in program meetings and lab meetings

Assure the laboratory technicians and analysts are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and equipment specific requirements. Performs annual assessments on staff.

Conduct a variety of complex and independent investigations in the planning, development and implementation of original experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques in the analysis of materials under experimentation.

Knowledge with College of America Pathology and ISO standard Certification/Accreditation standards and audits

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level:

Education/Training: Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

Experience: Work requires five years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Preferences:

Previous experience managing and leading projects.
