What the School Substance Use Counselor does:
Assists with developing, implementing, and monitoring substance abuse prevention programs; works with school staff to identify substance use needs for individual students. Works as a liaison between students, families, and community/private agencies to ensure substance use needs are met. Develops and leads small group and individual counseling sessions related to substance abuse, working with students to prevent addiction, cope with withdrawal symptoms, and work towards sobriety for students. Provides psychoeducation to staff on co-occurring disorders, and substance use within student population.
Applying principles, theories, and methods of behavioral health services
Applying interviewing and assessment techniques
Applying evidence-based theories on addiction
Managing a caseload of both small group and individual students
Completing and maintain records and reports as needed
Establish rapport and maintain relationships with students and families
Working alongside school team on behavior management program
Provide supervision of students in the school environment
Outreach to the student population through various prevention activities such as bulletin boards, Red Ribbon Week and National Drug Facts Week
Provides classroom presentations on drugs, alcohol, decision-making and addiction
Will travel between all PHILLIPS campuses to facilitate programs, conduct outreach, and ensure a consistent approach to substance use counseling across all locations
What the Substance Use Counselor brings to the team:
Applicants must be willing to work on obtaining their Commonwealth Certified Substance Abuse Counselor certification (CSAC), required
Bachelor's in social work, counseling, or related field, required
State license in one of the following areas, preferred: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
