The Lions Eye Bank of Eastern Virginia, a not-for-profit transplant agency, is seeking a per Diem Procurement Technician
The primary responsibilities of this position are to procure eye tissue from donor cadavers. Tissue procurement duties of this position are performed safely with consciousness of blood borne pathogens using Universal Precautions.
Job Description:
When on-call, respond within 10 minutes to a text or phone call attempt
Be responsible for finding a replacement/back-up technician in the event of inability to perform duties during a scheduled shift
Contact Administrator On Call with necessary consultations
Gather/maintain supplies necessary to procure or preserve eye tissue
Understand and perform the duties listed in the Lions Medical Eye Bank Policy and Procedure Manual with respect to procurement, donor evaluation, consent, medical record review, and particularly the enucleation, in-situ excision, and ad hoc recovery procedures
When electronic medical records have not been reviewed by a trained Donor Coordinator, copy and review all medical records necessary to evaluate a donor for the intended use of the donor’s tissue, even if records are located at a facility other than the location of recovery
Perform blood draws and vitreous draws as necessary
Perform all duties with respect to the donor’s body, next of kin, funeral homes/cremation facilities, hospitals, medical examiner offices
Perform all duties so as not to infringe on OSHA rules, FDA rules, EBAA standards, State of Virginia law, and U.S. Federal law
Demonstrate skill, ethics, and professional behavior at all times when performing Eye Bank functions
When adept at procedures, be available to demonstrate or assist in training new procurement staff
Ensure proper and complete documentation of all forms and data fields
Pay and Hours
We are are 24/7 facility and are hiring for overnight and weekend shifts.
Pay is per diem, $135 per donor plus mileage and toll reimbursement.
Required:
Exceptional written, presentation, and interpersonal skills
Well practiced prioritization, deductive reasoning, and leadership skills
Familiarity with databases, word processing, and spread sheets
Must be able to perform delicate manual procedures
Valid state vehicle operator license and reliable vehicle
Academic studies focused on biology, anatomy, pathology, or epidemiology
Able to lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds
Preferred
Secondary education with science or healthcare concentration
Twelve months relevant work experience
Knowledge of medical terminology and medical charts
Conditions of Employment
Organ donation is a 24/7 endeavor, this means that we cover every holiday and weekend.
Initial training will be scheduled in the lab located at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Once a certain level of training has been obtained, the trainee will be on the call schedule with the trainer, and hours vary. All training will be paid at $12/hr.
You are required to drive and maintain your own vehicle. Procurement sites are located throughout Hampton Roads and surrounding areas. Travel reimbursement is provided.
