Job Description

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Housing Specialist to join our team. The Housing Specialist will play a crucial role in assisting clients in securing and maintaining affordable housing options. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of housing resources and regulations in New York City, along with excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Assessment: Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients' housing needs, preferences, and eligibility for various housing programs.

Housing Search: Assist clients in locating suitable housing options based on their needs, preferences, and budget constraints. This may include conducting apartment searches, coordinating property viewings, and liaising with landlords and property managers.

Application Assistance: Guide clients through the application process for housing programs, including completing necessary paperwork, gathering required documentation, and submitting applications within deadlines.

Tenant Education: Provide education and support to clients on tenant rights and responsibilities, lease agreements, budgeting for housing expenses, and maintaining a stable tenancy.

Case Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, including housing plans, progress notes, and referrals to additional services or resources as needed.

Landlord Relations: Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with landlords and property owners to facilitate successful housing placements and resolve any tenancy-related issues that may arise.

Advocacy: Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure they receive fair and equitable treatment in housing-related matters, including addressing discrimination or housing barriers.

Community Outreach: Collaborate with community organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to identify housing resources, promote housing programs, and expand access to affordable housing opportunities.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, public administration, or a related field preferred.

Minimum of 2 years of experience working in housing assistance, social services, or related field.

Knowledge of New York City housing resources, regulations, and programs, including but not limited to Section 8, NYCHA, HPD, and supportive housing.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish rapport with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders, or other barriers to housing stability.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively advocate for clients and negotiate with landlords.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management software.

Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.Company Description
