Overview:

Plans and manages academically based activities on the hematology/oncology unit in collaboration with other unit staff, the assigned teacher aid, and volunteers. Identifies students in need of academic support and provides individualized student intervention and group activities with an academic focus.

Responsibilities:

• Identifies potential candidates for school services from hospital census, team referrals, and other sources. Communicates with family to gather necessary information and consent for services.

• Provides information to parents about the hospital school program, community resources, learning needs of child, and educational options.

• Assesses individual educational needs, selects goals, and provides activities for school-aged and adolescent students in collaboration with family, team members, and home school districts.

• Communicates with NCH school liaison and school districts or teachers to provide instruction based on district’s curriculum and to understand and support the child’s individual education plans.

• Completes documentation as required by the hospital in a timely and thorough manner. Attends and contributes to interdisciplinary team meetings as needed.

• Educates the hospital staff and community on the role and importance of school services within and outside of the hospital.

Qualifications:

Education Requirement:

• Bachelor’s Degree in education, required.

• Master’s Degree, preferred.

Licensure Requirement:

Valid State of Ohio Department of Education License, required.

Certifications:

• Certification in Special Education such as Specific Learning Disabled, Developmentally Handicapped, Orthopedically Handicapped, or Intervention Specialist, required.

Skills:

• Excellent communication and teaching skills.

• Ability to address individual academic needs of students in K-12.

• Strong initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Experience:

Three years of experience working with students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, required.
