Under the direction of the Orthopedic Physicians assists in the examination, treatment, and follow-up care of patients with orthopedic conditions. Under the direction of a registered nurse assist with the care of orthopedic center patients.

Schedule: Monday-Friday (7:00am-5:00pm)

Location: Travel between all orthopedic clinic sites, including Dublin, Westerville, New Albany, Hilliard, and downtown is required

Responsibilities

1. Supports the philosophy and objectives of Nationwide Children?s Hospital (NCH) and assists in interpreting these to patients and visitors. 2. Performs duties within the framework of the policies and procedures as established by NCH and the Orthopedic Center.* 3. Provides a therapeutic environment and appropriate interaction with the patient and family. * 4. Applies and maintains casts, splints and orthopedic soft good appliances as directed by a physician or nurse practitioner. Provides patients and families with instructions on cast care, crutch walking and orthopedic appliance care.* 5. Demonstrates sterile and aseptic techniques, as appropriate, in the performance of and/or assisting with procedures and interventions. * 6. Maintains adequate inventory of orthopedic supplies. Including ordering supplies and putting away stock.7. Responsible for cleaning and stocking exam and treatment rooms between patients and at the end of the clinic session.8. Under the direction of a physician or nurse practitioner, the cast tech may perform, but not limited to the following:a. Wound dressings b. Suture removalc. Application of splints, casts and other orthopedic appliancesd. Crutch fitting and instruction* 9. Documents procedure and other appropriate information on the medical record.* 10. Performs other care activities within scope of training and competency as appropriate when not functioning as orthopedic technician including. a. Vital Signsb. Holding patients for proceduresc. Responsible for rooming patients* 11. Functions as a team member, performing related duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or Operations Supervisor supporting the ?One Team? philosophy. 12. Participation in Orthopedic Center meetings, Quality assurance/Improvement activities and the evaluation of practice changes in relation to the cast technician role. 13. Participates in current research activities and maintains awareness of research affecting patient care. 14. Assists with orientation of new personnel. 15. Attends and provides unit in-service education programs as appropriate to role.16. Provides observational experience for students, observing the rights and dignity of each patient and family. 17. Continues professional growth through the identification of personal learning needs, setting goals and planning a course of action to meet those needs.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma

Experience:

1 year previous healthcare experience

Basic computer skills

Strong customer service, interpersonal oral and written communication skills

Certification:

Preferred but not required: Active/Current Orthopedic Cast Tech/Suture Tech/EMT Certification from a Medical Assisting Program, STNA or equivalent combination of education an experience
