My client has an opportunity for an experienced Metallurgist/ Metallography Tech to join their Materials Testing team. This position offers a unique chance for you to apply, develop, and challenge your skills and abilities on a daily basis. You will work in a testing laboratory environment in areas related to the chemical, mechanical, and metallurgical properties of a wide variety of metals. Experience with various alloys in areas including machining, manufacturing, fabricating, foundry, and welding is desired.

In this role you will be responsible for the following primary activities:

Provide customer and sales support regarding mechanical testing and material properties and how they relate to the testing of materials including pre-sale qualification, quoting, and post-sale / testing support.

Perform tensile, impact, hardness and load testing of customer supplied samples according to applicable standards or specifications.

Prepare metallographic specimens per ASTM E3 for use in the evaluation of samples.

Perform metallographic evaluations of material to include determination of grain size, heat-treat evaluation, identification of microstructure constituents or inclusions, coating thickness measurement, case depth determination, analysis and identification of corrosion products, corrosion testing, and macro and micro hardness testing.

Interpret and comment on test results from tensile, impact, and hardness testing and how they relate to the customer’s material or applicable standard or specification.

Request and collaborate on non-destructive testing of castings, assemblies, or customer components.

Perform failure analysis on failed components to verify material, identify failure mode, evaluate material for factors contributing to the failure, and offer commentary on root cause of failure.

Review customer load testing requirements and develop a testing protocol including fabrication of fixturing to meet unique customer required load testing.

Organize, analyze, and present test procedural information and test results from testing into a technical report to be presented to the customer.

Request and collaborate on non-destructive testing of customer components.

Qualifications and Skills

B.S. in Materials Science is desired but not required

Two years or more experience in a manufacturing/fabrication or similar environment with exposure to material properties or testing.

Knowledge of properties of materials and material standards including ASTM, ISO, NACE, PED, ASME IX, AWS, CWB, and Military specification

Knowledge of NDE methods, techniques, and acceptance criteria. NDT certifications are not required but are a plus.

Experience with metallographic preparation, and hardness testing techniques.

Experience with metallurgical laboratory equipment including cutoff saw, mounting press, polishing equipment, microscopes, cameras, hardness testers, micrometers, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, and image analysis systems as well as metallurgical processes and procedures for polishing, etching, and the evaluation of materials.

Must have strong interpersonal skills supporting collaboration and teamwork with a diverse group of engineering, operations, and materials management. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communications abilities
