DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: The EKG Department provides electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) services for patients within the health system. An EKG may help find the cause of unexplained chest pain or other symptoms of heart disease which assist providers with patient assessments.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The EKG Technician provides centralized EKG services for patients in accordance with established policies and procedures. Responds to support staff to perform EKG procedures and related tasks including EKG network oversight, timely follow through of EKG performance, interpretation and reporting back to appropriate caregivers, providers, and facilities. This position does not directly supervise any other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Performs and produces accurate and interpretable EKG per the organization’s policies, procedures and established guidelines.

Maintains St. Charles Health System’s EKG database network and provides clinical oversight and troubleshooting for the system and the region.

Conducts timely office procedures (charges, charge audits, editing, filing, data collection, ordering, other) as required by St. Charles Health System.

When working in the outpatient setting:

Schedules and performs outpatient EKGs, device checks, and ambulatory monitoring appointments (when working in outpatient setting).

Assists with device database entries and oversight.

EDUCATION

Required: High school diploma or GED.

Preferred: Additional training or education in related coursework.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required: AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.

12 Lead EKG course completion within 90 days of hire.

Preferred: N/A

EXPERIENCE

Required: N/A

Preferred: Patient care experience.

ED Tech, EMT, CNA or similar experience.

EKG training and work experience.

Experience with data base and/or EKG network systems.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Continually (75% or more): Standing and walking, keyboard operation, use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.

Frequently (50%): Sitting, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-25 pounds.

Occasionally (25%): Bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, reaching overhead, grasping/squeezing, ability to hear whispered speech level.

Rarely (10%): Climbing stairs.

Never (0%): Climbing ladder/step-stool, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 25-50 pounds, operation of a motor vehicle.
